Instead of using Trout and Perch I am looking to find some kind of Cichlid for something different.

I have heard that some Geophagus, more specifically the Geophagus brasiliensis, can be kept in cool water and have been known to populate some water ways in Perth.

Curious as to wether or not these fish would work well in aquaponics and also if they are edible? (or because they are classed as a domestic fish is it frowned upon to eat them?)

Not very big and wont grow at all over the colder weather I wouldnt think. Comparatively expensive to stock too? Well compared to perch, barra and trout.

Apparently Brasiliensis taste very nice. Just be extra careful with what goes in the water if you want to eat them though, notice on a lot of fish medicines it says something like:

DO NOT USE ON FISH MEANT FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION.

Just treat with pool salt, 3ppt.
That covers most issues.
Bad cases you can bump up to 6ppt.

If a fish is really bad, knock on its head. When you aren't attached to them, food is cheap, and they cost $1 ea you don't worry about the occasional cull.
