In Topic: Collection Of Live Rock From Beaches

So instead of me going out and collecting live rock your saying i should leave it up to the fish shops to do it so they can charge me an arm and a leg for a bit of rock? if anything them going out in boats is damaging the reefs more than me considering the reefs i would be going to are closer to shore where far less marine life lives. I've attached a thread of people talking about it and they don't seem to worry about your so called "sustainability". If your so worried about me taking a few rocks maybe you should start opening your eyes and having a look at real problems that reefs face today.

also i dont see hundreds of poeple at the beach collecting live rock.... i understand what your saying but its a tad different?

Was speaking to a marine fish shop and was told they collect their live rock which they sell from the ocean? Was planning on leaving it in the sun, letting it dry out then use it as base rock. Where are you able to get it from though does anyone know? I went down for a snorkel at burns beach and it all looked like limestone. On a better would be able to go further out and look better though

I had a 300l cichlids tank full of peacocks and other Africans. The setup contained of limestone rocks, fake plants and driftwood. Filtration was just a Rhein canister. Every time I cleaned my tank I would take out all the rocks and stir up my sand then do a water change. Then I'd reset up the tank. This way is always have a new look me keep it interesting. Does matter what fish you have I guess? Mine were just cichlids and could survive in a puddle of mud. Also I wouldn't be worried about disturbing territories as they will just make new ones. Also your meant to change your set up every time you add a new fish. Tbh in my opinion people make too much of a fuss about fish. It's all personal opinion.

I would love to add in a sump but I don't think my parents would like me gutting out my side draws to put a sump into them. Plan on just putting a protein skimmer on the side and building a hood with the lights built in and room for the skimmer.

All seems pretty straight forward just need to make a few purchases and the tough part deciding on the stuff to purchase...

i currently have a nano 30l which has started my addiction to corals and is probably going to make me broke D:

will most certainly be getting some sort of led lights but not sure what ones yet and am still browsing the skimmer options. The aquaone skimmer seemed good value for money. Does the live rock break down the nitrates and nitrites produced by the fish?

Is using ro water and salt mix a cheaper option that buying the salt water? i have just been buying it as its rather convenient...

ive been to vebas a few times on the weekends but they were rather busy both times and staff dont seem to be able to give you much time :/ there is a marine shop near by in wangara that is really helpful and as they are only marine know their stuff well.
