Family: Terapontidae (Grunters)

Genus: Hephaestus

Species: Carbo

Native Location: Queensland to The Northern Territory, around The Gulf of Carpentaria

Native Environment: Clear, high flowing water with a sandy bottom but occasionally found in muddy waters.

Temp: Minimum 15°c

Max Size: 35cm, usually 20cm.

Life Span: Quite long lived, usually over 10 years if well kept.

Breeding: Coal Grunters are an egg scatterer, won’t breed in captivity without hormones injected.

Feeding Habits: Found my Coal Grunter to be a bit hard to feed at first. Is a carnivore, will readily eat Hikari Food Sticks when trained into eating them.

Compatibility: Aggressive, stalks and attacks fish of the same size. Not a community fish, better in its own tank.

Adult: Coal%20Grunter%20005_zpsiotd5mkq.jpg

Additional Info: I find my Coal Grunter an awesome fish to own but is quite aggressive to any other types of fish that swim where it does, although it doesn't pay much attention to bottom feeders. An awesome looking fish, one of the best looking Australian native fish I've seen, even the best out of all of them with golden speckling, and bars that aren't usually easily visible. The are quite thick bodied and tall with a small, perchish mouth. Aggressive feeder most of the time, but is very gentle with my fingers!

:)  Haven't had him for long, but an awesome fish! Highly recommend them to anyone who has the option to get one!
