Hey all, planning on building an 8x4/8x3 plywood build for some pbass or Barra. I've looked at the sheets at Bunnings and they have marine plywood (stronger and more expensive) or just normal plywood. Normal structural plywood sheets that are 21mm thick cost $78 a sheet (2.4x1.2) but marine plywood 12mm thick costs $93 a sheet (2.4 x 1.2). I'm thinking of going with marine plywood and lining it with builders plastic and ditch the epoxy if it's not necessary otherwise will do epoxy and builders plastic. Edges will be sealed with polyurethane which I think is the best for plywood. My only concern with the marine ply is that it's only 12mm thick and it's going to hold about 400 gallons of water. I've never built anything like this so I honestly have no idea what I'm doing and just wanted to get some advice from you guys!

Cheers, Tom

I see no replies as of yet, so I'll throw my 2 cents in as a fabricator and engineer. Stone fabricator, but still I work with many departments within the company so can throw in a few comments as far as other mediums go too. Marine grade ply is probably going to be your best bet as far as durability goes. Instead of builders plastic I'd consider rubber pond liner. Also available from Bunnings, but much more durable too. Epoxy can go quite hard, therefore brittle, so maybe a more flexible adhesive might be better? Are you planning a glass/Perspex insert in this build or essentially just trying to make an indoor pond? There are some good threads on here. Have a search if you haven't already. I asked a similar question a few months back and Buccal gave the best advice. If iPhones weren't such a pita I would find the link for you.

I'd definitely be using a rubber pond liner inside it or at the very least a thick coat of paint on pond liner (the crommelins stuff is good). Also make sure there is a of a lot of external bracing, as 400 gallons is about 1500kgs of water and you don't want that on your living room floor. Draw up a design and maybe have someone who has some experience with these things take a look over it and do the first fill outside :)

Good luck with the project mate!

Get the inside fibreglassed. This will also add heaps of strength to the structure. Not a cheap exercise though.
