from memory i got mine from vebas aquariums, o'connor/fremantle.
think it was about $30 for 150grams.

Oh dear...this sounds like the growth hormones in chickens old wives tale....there are NO hormones used in chickens and Id be very surprised if there were hormones used in any fish food.

MOST hormones are broken down by the body if eaten into in active substances...most need to be injected to have any effect.
Therefor in MOST cases if you hear about hormones being fed to this or that animal you can bet its just not true.

in Australia it is illegal to use hormones in all animal live stock except in pigs i think, but they are tightly regulated. only hormones i kno of thats available for the aquarium trade is the ones used to induce breeding in catfish. and there hard to get, you need it prescribed by a vet.

Hi James
If I remember back to my uni lectures on pigs I think true hormoes are not used.
Growth enhancers are used but these are usually vitamins, proteins, and anti parasite treatments.
I think the problem has been with livestock (and probably with fish food as well) is that people have assumed that growth/colour enhancers MUST be hormones when of course this isnt the case.
Another problem may also be that people hear about hormones being used overseas and wrongly assume that the same questionable practices are carried out here...in most cases Aust is alot more responsible with the use of things like this (hormoes, antibiotics etc). It can make things a little more difficult here but the last thing we want is the idiotic situation where front line antibiotics can be bought over the counter, the over use of such drugs and the disasterous resitance that occurs from use.

Bringing this back to life haha, my dad uses it mixed in with hikari pellets and some other stuff we got given when we bough our tank, but it's an all male display so it is a bit more safe!
