Been keeping cichlids for a little while now? Mastered the Malawi cichilds, bred the Red Empress, grown up a massive colony of Electric Yellows? You might be feeling a little bored with mouthbrooders and looking for a challenge; something a little different that will test your skills in fish husbandry and make you stand out from all the other fishkeepers?
If so then the next PCS meeting is one you shouldn’t miss!
Poncho/Brett will be delivering a presentation on:

The Lamprologines of Lake Tanganyika.

Some members of this community would have you believe that Tanganyikan cichlids are dull, boring, grey/silver fishes with no personality. Let Brett set the record straight as he goes over some examples and experiences of fish that he has kept and bred from this amazing tribe of fishes – the most diverse tribe of cichlids in the lake.
And if that’s not enough, attendees will also be treated to:

  • Cam’s sausage turning prowess in the PCS kitchen – cool drinks also available
  • The PCS library, with some of the best fish literature available for loan to members
  • The cichlid and catfish PCS show table, where you can participate and/or view some of the prized fish of fellow members. Every entrant wins a prize!
  • Some fresh PCS merchandise items up for sale
  • And of course the Sponsors raffle table, where you can win some fantastic prizes

All welcome. Hope to see you all there – doors open 7:30pm & meeting starts 8pm May 6th Rotary Hall Sandgate St South Perth.

Do you know Lamprologus are correctly riverine species... all Lake Tangkanyikan lamprologus are incorrectly described and are actually without a genis

Cichlids Room Companion describes them as Ex- Lamprologus....till they are correctly described

Comments: Stiassny (1997) showed that Lamprologus sensu stricto should be confined to the riverine species found in the Congo basin, and furthermore identified a so called ossified group (species with an ossified labial ligament) among the Lake Tanganyika lamprologines. The type species of Neolamprologus (N. tetracanthus) does not have an ossified labial ligament, so all species assigned to Neolamprologus should strictly speaking also lack this derived character. That leaves the ossified group without a proper generic name. Konings (1998) suggested that for the time being, the species of the ossified group should be called Lamprologus, due to the lack of an available generic name. So, Konings should be credited as proposing the use of Lamprologus and not Stiassny , in her paper she identify the ossified group, but she did not propose a provisional name.

Will be great to see some Lamprologines on the show table - good on ya Ant :)

Just to clarify, my presentation will be on the tribe Lamprologini, not limited to the genus Lamprologus but includes Alto's, Julies, Chalinochromis, Telmatochromis and a few others (pretty much all non-mouthbrooders except the emperor cichlid). I won't be focusing on classification as it's confused and is probably of little consequence to fishkeepers anyway. Rather I'll just be talking about the huge variety to be found in this tribe of fishes and share some tips I've learnt from breeding and keeping them. Hopefully it's interesting.

Thanks for the info though Rod :)

Do we have to bring fish from lake tangyanika to the show table? Or can we bring manly fish?

As long as it's a cichlid or catfish - unless the comp rules have changed?

But don't feel the need to compensate for your lack of masculinity with a fish. Just go with it, like Dazza does ;)

Given the sudden chill in the air, there will be some some aquarium heaters on the raffle table at the coming meeting.

Among the prizes up for grabs is this Hydor Eth-300W inline heater donated by Vebas Aquariums, so  our thanks to them.
