I just noticed that a tank I have set to 26 degrees is only 24 degrees.
I purchased this heater about a year ago for the aquascape comp
(See thread here: http://www.perthcich...showtopic=60768 )
Looking at the heater, there are bubbles on the glass outside the element, and the bottom of the heater looks opaque.
See pic below to see what I'm on about:

I'll unplug the heater and crank it up a bit higher, but before I do that I would like to know if it looks stuffed? If so, I'll just turf it and get a new heater

Still looks ok - bubbles outside is normal - moisture inside the unit is the cause of the opaqueness, this is also normal, as long as there is not an excess of moisture that builds up in the thermostat region - this excess moisture will corrode the unit immaturely.

I've got a small amount of moisture or condensation in mine. Been that way for several years and still going ok.

Last night I did a bit of maintenance on said tank, and the water was ice cold. The thermometer reading was 19 degrees, even though the heater was set to 26 degrees. I cranked the heater setting to 36 (max) last night and the water temp is now 22 degrees. I can safely say that the heater is now kaputski, so the Mrs will get a new heater today while I'm at work. Serves as a good reminder for me to check all my heaters are working in this colder temperature. Will check them when I get home.

In the mean time, can anyone recommend a good digital thermometer? I have a Sera Precision thermometer on all my tanks, but would like to get some digital ones as well, so it's just a quick glance at the temp as I walk past.

Thanks

Hi dicky
I don't trust cheapo China crap, so I'll get something locally. Appreciate the idea though.

Well I have all my tanks with those digital gauges and have been there  for over a year and still going strong even on same batteries  but it is ultimately your choice

Yep I hear ya. 99% is probably from China, but I'd be surprised if something so cheap would be accurate.

All heaters are crap, there are others that have a readout built in. Rob has some, probably from China though.

Nnothing wrong with china mate, I just wont do any importing of electronic stuff myself.  Bypassing Government approvals (e.g.: SAA) can be dangerous, as well as illegal. Not such a big deal with something like a thermometer, but heaters......
