So how well do Oscars go with Malawian cichlids?
I wouldnt mind getting a red oscar but i already have a nice collection of cichlids.

Would it be ok to get a very small oscar and hope he grows up to play well with the existing fish?

I have
2x Electric Yellows.
2x Dragon Bloods.
2x Fire Birds.
2x Bumble Bees.
1x Neon Spot.
1x Polytsigma.

Short answer is no

Doesn't matter how small it is it will eventually eat what ever will fit in its mouth

Fully agree but if u go with larger guys or aggressive guys u might be ok and it all depends on the Oscar to if u have a sissy like my guy who gets beat up buy 3 cm convicts lol you might be ok but all u can do is give it a go if it doesn't work have a back up plan

You fully agree yet you keep Africans with your Oscar.

Oscars are very prone to hole in the head and do much better in softer water. Also a lot of africans nip fins and after a while the Oscars find will look crap and he won't appreciate it.
So I wouldn't keep them together that's my opinion.

Mate anything is possible, if your tank is big enough you might be ok. Give it a go and see what happens smile.gif

oscars might prefer softer water but how many people actually run a RO unit for their oscars? imo the africans will bash the oscar, eventually he will eat them (if he survives). not a good match

my oscar is housed with electric yellows big and small and he doesnt care about them as long as he gets his feed from me,
the yellows swim with him and they get on well if i was to take them out the tank my oscar puts on an attitude and gets really grumpy
IMO you wont know the outcome until you try it out

I have keeped my guys in a ph between 7-8 for years now and this is a good range for these guys I have heard people using it for diskes but not for oscars, but wow in some places u might Need one if your water is not in this range

i guess my point was, the "these fish require different water" thing is pretty pointless when you keep everything in water straight out of the tap anyway. but there are plenty of other good reasons why you wouldnt do it.

oscars are very prone to hole in the head when kept in high ph of course it has a lot to do with diet also but high ph doesnt help.

For sure guys to high ph is not good for anny fish but if u keep it stable and it doesn't go up and Down radically and feed your fish a well rounded diet and keep the water at good levels u shouldn't see anny sings of HITH with anny fish it's a first for me having oscars with other cichlids but have had menny oscars but only come across one problem he desided to try and eat sharky one day and had to put him in my grow out tank but yet the convict and jahonnii was ony half the size and he's afrid of these to I think it's the fact that if he goes near them they don't back down and when I got him he was only 2cm and the smallest fish in the tank the only time I have seen anny of the others have a go at him is when he was trying to eat the pearls eggs and he got a snip and never went back and if angle is trying to clean someone alse he chases them and they might give him a open mouth threat but thats a bout it and then hovers in frount of hir to have a clean I think that I have just got lucky with my lot because they where all around 1cm when I got them and they growed together and just got on there is the odd scrap over who's laying there eggs where to day but never anny full on bralws

I wouldn't recommend it.

The two types of fish are not a good mix. You might "get away with it" but what would be the point of that? A good display? Not really.

If you like your malawis and you like oscars, don't mess around, get another tank and do it properly.
