Im chasing and id on these geos i purchased from vebas last year thay where sold under the name off red horse face and that does not really help to much because that name is used on a whole range of geos. I think thay are some variant of altifron's maybe with a bit of luck someone on here will know or even could be the breeders tia.

Little copy and paste job from earth eaters Australia as to why it wont be The name "surinamensis" was used alot in the pass to describe anything that resembled a "surinamtnsis type" fish and was a worldwide phenomenon (p.147, Weidner 2000). If you look at old literature many different looking geophagus with different breeding behaviours have been labelled as G. surinamensis. So it is very likely back then, that anything imported into Australia was labelled G. surinamensis. We know that we definately don't have the true G. surinamensis species in the country at present. Even from all overseas reports they are almost a thing of the past, with some suggestions they are around in the United States but are "rare as rocking horse shit". The general opinion is that the area in which true G. surinamensis are found was once a large early export location, however these days this area seems to have stopped exporting to a degree.

I'd have said surinamensis also, mine look very similar to this and they were purchased as surinamensis also from Vebas.

Shops would be going off what the wholesaler calls them. Probably just a case of AI or Bayfish being lazy

Or people mislabelling to make more $$.

Seen it happen with hybrid stingrays, 3 way rays (being matilla motoro leopoldi mix) that look very leopoldi in colour and pattern sold as 50/50 or 75s even (leo x motoro only) which are significantly dearer.

look like Rio Branco to me but that is the problem with wholesalers and LFS that use trade names rather than correctly ID the fish

click here and learn a bit more, site is a bit dated but good info   http://www.eartheate...x.php?page=main

In February last year I sold about 200 Rio Branco to a couple of local breeders, I'm pretty sure that I also put some in the auction around that time. These are probably from that batch, I had a colony of 9 large adults that produced several batches of 200 to 300 fry at a time, all were sold in Perth or used as feeders.

Cheers Terry
