hi

just seeing if/how to breed pleco's (goldspot)??
can it be done? i was going to set up a 6x2x2 just for pleco to breed them..or is it to hard?
i see my 24cm goldspot in his cave and he seem's to do a faning think like bn? its only when i give them new water..
and how to sex them?

in a tank id say no chance mate, i have heard of people north QLD doing it in dams.

I'm no expert either. But I guarantee they will not breed in a 6x2. Need something much, much larger.

Agreed, not viable in an Aquarium.

I heard (friend-of-friend sort of deal) that someone out Collie way managed it in a back yard pond. Clay lined, loads of mud to burrow into. Imagine that this would be the smallest scale you could do it on.

so what size pond? 3000?

Apparently pulled out a lap pool from back yard and made the hole into a pond. Probably more in vicinity of 5-8kL

i also heard of what leigh is talking about but from what i heard last year with big rains the whole backyard flooded!

I would think to try this in areas where water temp doesn't stay warm enough without heating the cost would outway the benefit. Look at something else to breed maybe king.

I wonder if an existing solar pool heating setup (black tubing on roof) would help with this. Can make a significant diff in winter with pools. Imagine this could be an option.

Still, all sounds too hard. Just breed B/Nose.

right on the money they are bred in large numbers in dams in qld mainly... still almost impossible to sex even at 40-50cm... usual thing is to throw a dozen adults into a dam and they dig their own caves in the muddy walls of the dam and breed like rabbits.. hence why the price of these plecs has come down considerably over the years....

Gold spots wont breed in pool like conditions unless its got mud and what not in it. Mainly in qld they breed in the muddiest of dams and they are almost what is to be impossible to sex. I would try something alot
more less complicated

i have had them breed in a 1200L pond with no mud and they breed in driftwood.
