#362258 Which Sponsors Buy Fish?

Posted by Johan on 19 June 2017 - 11:57 PM

Interesting topic. I breed Discus fish and find the exchange for store credit a bit odd for myself. I have a full breeding setup so I don't need any more equipment or food etc. Store credit is fine for occasional breeding and can work ok for such breeding. If you breed 100 or 200 Discus fish at a time I don't think that the lfs will take that quantity either unless they can get it for next to nothing and I am not willing to give my hard raised babies away. I have tried and found very little interest and very low enthusiasm as well. Pricing on these fish are a bit extream in the retail market and understandably so as they go through a few hands before reaching the public. I must also say that I do not have a great variety so can't supply an assorted mix ATM. That is unfortunately an issue on my side but I am a hobbyist and not a commercial breeder. So what to do, for the moment I just advertise and sell off gumtree and some of the local Facebook pages and here on PCS. This method works for me at the moment. Fish that don't sell now grow bigger and sell for more later. When I get over stocked I just run a special. If you produce good quality healthy fish the public will get to know you and your support will grow day by day. That's my experience to share. The fish market is a bit in slowdown mode ATM. Not that many spenders out there. Economy is agains all of us right now. If my hobby pays for itself and does not cost me anything it's happy days.

#357535 Gluteraldehyde

Hi guys, glut is a non oxidising biocide that we use in cooling towers to kill bacteria. It is also widely used in fish meds at very low concentrations with mesotin and BKC. BKC is used to kill macro organisms, mainly in see water pipes. At the dose rate for tanks I do not think it will harm fish however when they swim through a concentrated zone it can burn the gills. Dilute before usage.

Hi guys, well, for those that saw my fist post with the Discus babies, I am happy to show you that those babies are now much bigger. I have attached a link with my video showing the original batch as well as some more smaller babies that are growing nicely. Just have a massive battle with them gill flukes - it's a constant battle, they say you can't irradiate them and u believe that now. Enjoy.
Kind regards to you all. Hope the video works.

Thanks mate, it is very rewarding and for me just to see the babies swim and stick around the parents just makes  my day. Discus only start taking on the rounded shape from about the two month mark.  They continue to look like little spear heads for up to about 3 - 6 months before finally shaping out. The colors come after this period unless you feed them heaps of carotene or other color enhancers.

Hi,

Found myself posting a URL in a post from last year :).  I should look at the dates hey. I am struggling to post pic's so I just attached the link below. It is a video I attempted (Still learning) on my i-phone yesterday evening. These are my little babies, 6 day free swimming today and going well. Not lost any of the brood yet but it's way to soon to be sure so will see how we go. So far so good. PS, I am not a club member yet but sure if I was I think I would have taken the prize for June - Discus fry are booming in my tank at this very moment. :)

#352691 New Discus Display - Additions

Posted by Johan on 09 June 2016 - 07:23 PM

Hi Guys, Great looking fish. I am not so handy to load up photos yet but I have attached a link if you are interested to look at it. I made a video on my iphone yesterday, forgive the music choice, not much to choose from. Anyways, I breed discus & Angel fish and am very passionate about them. The link is a video of my breeding pair with about 50 - 60 babies that are 6 days free swimming today. I hope you can see it. I am holding back with the Angels at the moment as the Discus are keeping me way to busy. I will practice posting pictures :). Maybe one day I will get it right.

#352584 Hi Guys

Just joined PCS so I am new as can be. Not to the hobby though. I have been breeding Angels and Discus for a few years in my home county. Been in Aus for 8 years now and started up the hobby again about a year. Just built up two breeding pairs now. One pair has a bunch of babies, to many to count at this stage. I am just hoping the gill flukes don't attack, hopefully the formaldehyde will keep them at bay. Anyways, keen to be part of the site.
Kind regards, Johan.
