#359083 What Spawned In Your Tank Today???

Posted by LexAgate on 29 January 2017 - 12:39 PM

I have decided to grow up a little colony of ngara and moved the parents on, just yesterday a female tried some spawning, was pretty hopeless at it too hahaha, I'm assuming she'll pick it up after a couple of goes?

#358433 Do Fish Shops Buy Your Fry?

And most shops would rather males, colored would be even better, however you can grow up a set of about 2 males and 5+ females or however and sell them as a colony once you get them all harmoniously breeding!

#358240 Filter Cleans - Should I Do?

Algae of course needs light, however a UV canister might grow some things...
Most algaes aren't really a problem they'll do a little bit of their own filtering, of course you'd probably want to keep it pretty scarce to lower the chances of a bloom.

Hybrids is always a tough one simply because everyone has their own opinion, if the fry looked cool sure I'd chuck one in a display, but to pass them on and sell them as hybrids, doesn't mean the next person will sell them as hybrids... that's where the problem is, no matter how hard you try greedy people wanting a quick buck will ruin it for everyone!

#357851 "black Widow" Frontosa

I can't decide if it looks good or bad but definitely different, I wouldn't buy or breed them, but I have seen people breed what they like to think are normal fronties and have had these mutations show through in the fry, which is showing that it isn't anything harmful that we know of, still way above the dyeing and injecting ect

#355753 Is My Fish Holding?

Posted by LexAgate on 06 October 2016 - 03:31 PM

You can seperate the fish to a whole different tank or with a divider (risky)!

For the first couple of times leave them to it so they can figure out what they are doing...

Personally I would prefer to leave the female to care for her kids rather than stripping... here are the major pro's and cons...

Stripping:
Pros: increased hatch rate (usually)
Easier to bring up and care for
Cons: fry have change of not knowing how to bring up their own fry (reduced instinct habits)
Can prevent the mother from spitting her fry (eats them under stress)

Naturally:
Pros: magnified instinct habits
Mother raises stronger/smarter fry (survival of the fittest *kinda)

Cons:
Lower hatch rate (usually)
Rarely (mother eats fry and continues to eat eggs after spawn) happens very rarely but have seen it happen once....

So leave her to it for the first couple of times so they know what's going on!

Hopefully that made sense I'm rushing and threw my grammar out the window!

#355726 Pseudotropheus Livingstonii (Malawi Shell Dwellers)

Posted by LexAgate on 05 October 2016 - 08:18 PM

After a great time with my German quality Ngara flametails I have decided I have bigger fish to fry!

I have just received 12 Pseudotropheus Livingstonii also known as Malawi shell dwellers!

Personally I had never heard of them... they are the most beautiful fish I have ever seen truly a sight to behold and they aren't even fully coloured!

For shells I have cut out the bottom of some conch shells to make lots of room for the fish themselves but it looks like they will only fit the smaller females...

I will be filling this post with plenty of pictures!!!

Here are a few, they are recently added and a little shy right now! 9e1e92d1b51f8a919545d7418f25515c.jpg

#350525 Tanks Yay!

Posted by LexAgate on 17 March 2016 - 08:41 PM

Hey guys just making a quick post, letting you guys know how everything is seeing as there were plenty of bumps along the way, my tanks are done, set up, finito.

I thought I'd show you guys my male ngara, the videos still do no justice he is a true stunner!

He has produced a good 100+ fry and I haven't moved many on, $20 ea if you might want to grab some...

I have also acquired 5 Aulonocara Kandeense from Germany, I have put them in their own 140 litre tank, one male has just begun to "black out" or colour up as you can see from the photo below.

Not much else going on in my tanks, the 4 footer is housing the ngara and has new silicone along the top...

So most things are running smooth...
