Hey guys,
Title pretty much says it all, I'm wanting to make a pleco display tank, (bristlenoses, peppermints and a few other L numbers) but I'm unsure as to what substrate they would prefer, sand or gravel. I've looked at a few youtube videos of tanks with various plecos in them and they mostly seem to have sand so I'm leaning towards sand but don't know what sand to use or where to get it. I have some driftwood and also want to put in some low maintenance plants. If anyone has some tips or experience, please share as I'm at a loss.

Cheers

Honestly - I have had BN's, peps and other L's breed equally well and happily in both. It doesn't appear to matter - I would recommend just picking what you think looks good.

I'm a fan of sand, I use white gingin river sand from sands and soils, $8 for 30kg. With most of my fish I try and replicate conditions similar to their natural habitat :)

I like sand plus it's a nice contrast with plecos. However, it is slightly harder to clean. You should get river sand from soils and soils. Looks great and it's really cheap. Another good thing about river sand is it doesn't show waste as clearly as play sand.
