Awesome fish!!
Very hardy, likes a bit softer water, lots of food and 20% water changes every week and it will thrive and grow well, live feeders and it will grow extremely well

Yeah; what he said.... I kept mine in hard water and grew really well. Out grew the other americans I had.

They generally get aggressive. Really tough, fun fish... All americans have big personalities so you should have a pretty cool pet on your hands. I fed mine Hikari.

I'm starting to see a pattern of my fish (Native Predators) getting more aggressive when I put them on Hikari. Don't know if its because the fish feels better and acts more naturally or if there is something in it that gives them the equivalent of 'roid rage.

i think fh have way to many problems so i gave him to someone who can relly look after him plus he got a 6ft all for him self, i saw a baby jaguar cichlid when i was out and snaped him up he awesome, such a funny little fellow he follows me thru the tank hopefully ill have alot more luck with this little guy, as too breeding them i would love that but i heard it can be very dangrous for them as they get quite agressive.

i have been watching alot off youtube clips on them and breeding time looks more like a battle lol thanks...

What pellet you feeding? Usually cichlids are pretty keen on any of the decent pellets available (NLS, Hikari, etc). Try not to get him used to live or frozen foods. It becomes expensive and inconvenient. Pellet is a way better balanced diet anyways.
