Unfortunately there isn't a don't like option Paul. This is a job for professionals like yourself, anything less is bordering on criminal liability.

At the end of the day have a go mate, you get the right silicon + decent glass + some common sense, you'll have a tank that you built that will last ages. I'm all for DIY!! :)

I'm all for DIY as well Riggers, especially when it comes to filtration. But when its 1000ltrs plus. I'd definitely be getting it professionally made. I'm sure it would just crack at the base and loose a shit ton of water everywhere, no one injured. But your still going to loose all your fish. There's no trial and error when that comes to that scenario, one morning you've got a full tank, later that arvo you've got an empty one. I'm talking from experience as well. It's a sickening feeling.

As riggers said, most important part is common sense,, if your a gun hoe try everything yourself, then it may end badly.
If you have a background that steers you in a relative direction and tips of the do's and dont's from the people in the know how, then it should be fine.
But don't short cut or put your own spin on it.

My background and present is I'm a carpenter with more than half a brain.
My first ever tank build is a 2500 liter and is 1m deep !!!
Many many years ago I got tips from Paul on how to build.
I've had no issues, and feel the peice of mind.
Since then I've built 120 odd smaller tanks.

Key is careful patient thinking and common sense.

What nonsense. Criminal liability, what a joke.. Just because you wouldn't build you own doesn't mean other people can't do it themselves... There is no difference in technique with building a 2 ft tank or a 10 ft tank...

There are three ways to get something done: do it yourself, hire someone, or forbid your kids to do it.

Even though your a fellow Hawks supporter Rigby, i have to disagree. A lot of tanks are incorrectly built, you can get away with it for awhile with smaller tanks but larger tanks are unforgiving. They need to be braced properly all round or way over engineered (glass thickness) for long term wear. Just the other day i was in a fish shop and noticed a big bow in a fairly large aquarium (12mm glass). Not good as glass does not bend well under normal circumstances. It was not braced all round and only spot siliconed on the top braces. These type of tank constructions DON'T LAST it's just a matter of time.

Mate I agree, if your not sure of what you're doing then don't build it, like you sandy I've seen some shockers....

But my point remains, if you do your homework, use some common sense and the right tools for the job and you can build yourself a tank as good as anything you can buy..

Saying that, building your own is not for everyone :)
