I have a tank which is growing out some neolamprologeus brichardi fulwe cichlids, and would like to use this tank for some other fish I want to grow out. Therefore I would like to know what size these fish will need to be for me to move them on. They are all 2cm TL.

There's no law or anything but I've always considered 3cm to caudal peduncle as absolute minimum. Dependent on species of course.

When trading with lfs I try to get it closer to 5cm so they can sell easier. When buying I like at least 5cm as it's much easier to see deformities

Basically what Poncho said - there used to be an old 'rule of thumb' of an inch and a quarter or 3cm as a minimum but inch and a half preferred or almost 4cm
My wholesaler prefers 4cm if possible but 5 is better and commands a little bit extra $$

Agree with the above, lately I've started seeing real small stuff up for sale 1-2cm. IMO that's way too small.

Couple of the lots I got at the last auction were the 4cm mark but one was sub 2cm.  Happy little fish but actually a worry that they will be eaten by the fire fish fry in my grow out tank.

Thanks for the info guys, that's very helpful.

I've just got home last night after a week and a bit away and the fish have grown to about 4cm in that time. I should leave my wife in charge of the fish more often.

Cheers

For an experienced cichlid breeder, buying 2cm fish is almost no risk at all IF they are netted and transported well. That said the above posts are perhaps the ethical way of looking at it. Many times I have bought 50 little 1cm fry from other breeders to then raise up myself.....  but they would never advertise them for sale at that size and would be horrified if I mentioned their name in this post!
