Hi matty, whats the difference between mono pecocks and the cichla species and all that? I see the monos have big lumps on their heads and was wondering if they didnt grow as large?

Cheers, tom

cichla is the family name for peacock bass. Cichla monoculous, cichla Azul, cicla ocellaris etc etc

the nuchal hump is something that males (of some species - not all of cichla from my understanding) develop with maturity - monoculous are one species which males do develop the hump.

In short, all cichla grow large, temensis is the largest recorded species, cichla monoculous however, will attain a good 50cm in aquaria in a large enough tank (8x3), since ive had mine in a 7x2.5 there far more active and explosive in movements compared to a 6x2 (which I fell maybe too small for these guys).

Excellent fish, most rewarding and interesting fish I have kept, will never have a tank with out them and am still chasing a big 40cm + male to go with the mini bass army I have atm.

just get a towel ready for feeding, and count your fingers after you dump food in.

Im all about the bass...........

Heres one for yous!! my 3 big girls, always holding the colour like this, love them to death, awesome patterns and colouring I think (not from Perth batch :D )

Hoping to get a  big male off another member here soon!

mind the water - looking dirty as they just smashed a 200gram back a whitebait :Rofl_3f:

Would love to get some Orinoco's, Tems, or Kelberri's........

Nice girls you have there.

They sure are eating machines, with a super fast digestive system when kept in water ~27C can feed them until they look like they will explode then a few hours later look like they haven't eaten in a week.

100% right there Alex.

Same with the bloody rays.

Worried to get a male though, reason why I sold the last 2 (featured in this topic) was cause when they spawned they smashed everything.

But the nuchal humps and colours of the males are insane......... Cant wait to see all yours grown out.

I think all females like you have now is the best scenario for a display. Adding a male is only asking for trouble unless you want to breed them and raise fry.

Mine are booting a long nicely. Should be 30cm within 6months no problems. Bigger ones are already taking whole whitebait.
