I was having a conversation with Aaron about essentially underrated cichlids or fish that no one even appreciates so I thought I'd start a topic about the cichlids you keep that you consider underrated.

This is one for me.

So lets see some of yours ;)

Petenia splendida "green", not many people have seen these guys in all their glory. Usually see then as awkward skinny juveniles.

Yeah. Aquotix had some beauties a couple months back:

I've kept both the red and the green. I think the greens win hands down.

The old faithful Red Humped Eartheater is a geo that is forgotten about also with all the newer types.

My female white convict. Long flowing fins. Body shape suggests male except the brilliant orange/red hue throughout 3/4 of her body. Trying to get a pic that shows off her true colour but it's hard in a 5x3x2 tank

Love the little convicts! Awesome character for a little fish.
Reminds of a psycho little bull terrier!
Brilliant and very underrated species.

+1 for red humps - awesome fish

N. cylindricus in good condition are stunning when they get some size to them

Neets and V. moorii are a couple others that never really get attention maybe cos they're not as colourful as others but still very cool because they're colour changing cichlids - completely change colour not colour up or get more intense colouration

Growing up a group of 6 Neets atm. Throwing them in the 5x3x2 today so will get some size pretty quick. Wouldn't mind another bloodline as they're all related. Could only find one breeder in WA though??

Nic parrots are another one I would like to get my hands on and grow up a group. Oh and Sajica. The list goes on...

I have 5 Neets I'm growing out too but probably from same bloodline - got them at Aquotix. Never come across any problem with regards to deformities or susceptibility to disease with the Neets so current bloodline is pretty good I reckon. Just have to worry about them killing each other

V.moori are the first tangs that I kept!
Beautiful species, would love to get some again.

Sajica!!! YES!!

This thread is BAD!!! Makes me want more tanks and more species..
Looks like the IBC might be out and some new racks in.

I like the common kribensis cichlid (Pelvicachromis Pulcher). This is one in my main tank at the moment:

I also really like the different types of West African cichlids like these guys I had last year (Pelvicachromis Taeniatus "Moliwe"):

Ok that's enough from me

What about the trusty old spilirum? Wicked little cichlid.

Neolamprologus brichardi... until they breed and breed and breed and breed.

Really love the Alto's as well. Totally overlooked by most hobbyists, as are a lot of tangs.

Agree with jason about Pulcher. Cool little fish. Nice in a decent sized colony.

Definitely the most underrated fish ive ever kept though are not cichlids, but thats not for this thread.

I loved my spilurum, septemfasciatus and sajica when I used to keep them. I never got around to keeping Herotilapia multispinosa. I saw some today and was somewhat tempted but decided against it.

I used to keep Amphilophus robertsoni ages ago too but they were sold on and the bloke that had them lost them. I seriously loved those fish. I haven't seen any available for years sadly.

I sold my breeding pair of septems because I couldn't raise them in a 5ft American community tank and had no space to raise the young. They bred for me all the time and were moved on to another guy and he never got them to spawn.

H.nicaraguense parrots are amazing. I had the most beautiful female once. I used to feed them on Discus colour enhancing granules and the green and orange on her was out of this world.

I never kept convicts since I was more interested in the other Archocentrus/ Cryptoheros/ Whatever they are now species. I so desperately wanted spinosissimus, centrarchus and Honduran Red Points, along with the various different Thoricthys spp.

I'd still like to possibly get my hands on a female convict with a large amount of orange, but that's a different story ;)

I was chatting twice in the last 2 days about Astatotilapia calliptera

Another one I've failed to mention. Large adult chocolate cichlids... Interesting colour scheme and shape with a docile nature, great fish.
