Today's paper (SICK BITCH)

Fish killer cleared
A Danish television journalist was acquitted by an appeals court yesterday of killing 12 guppy fish by pouring shampoo into an acquarium for a report on toxic material in the anti-dandruff product.
Lisberth Koelster was last may found guilty of violating animal protection laws. She had poured a very diluted amount of shampoo into the fish tank. After three days, all but one of the fish had died.

I reckon that Ike Jime (if done correctly) although violent is the most humane way to kill fishes...

Freezing or drugging seems like a torture before death to me... since there will be a short period of time where the fish will be suffering...

the most humain way i know to kill unwanted/sick fish is a very quick and strong blow to the head of the fish, yet others would argue against it. not as violent as the blender method though i would agree they wouldnt feel a thing that way.

My current preferred method, though it's only be exercised a few times, mostly on Characins.

The topic of this thread is the best non-violent method of killing your fish if you have to. Blender, chopping off heads, smashing on the floor and striking the head are all violent methods and not everyone is comfortable with these. Not to mention some fish will be too small to use some of these methods.

Having used to clove oil method a few times now on terminally sick and deformed fish, I can say with confidence that this is a quick and non-stressful way. Stress is usually observed when the fish starts breathing quicker and starts darting around, trying to evade the unseen source of stress. None of these behaviours are seen when I added the clove oil mixture to the water - they simply breath as normal, swim around as normal, but then after a few seconds tilt over and are asleep. Then I put them in the freezer to kill them. The effects of the oil last longer than it takes the water to freeze, so they won't wake up before they are dead.

Clove Oil MSDS.. According to this you should be using a respirator, gloves and goggles while handling..

...and I sometimes heat this stuff in an oil diffuser! Makes the house smell nice when combined with lemongrass. No breathing issues so far...

Good to know it anaesthetises fish though. When mine have been too sick to make it in the past I've popped them in the freezer but I'd rather put them to sleep first so thanks for the info.
