#331146 Marine Journal - Red Sea Max 130D

Posted by Blakey on 12 November 2014 - 06:24 PM

So I ran in to some big problems.

With the addition of the added pump and spray bar, the restrictiveness of the hydor flo and the adjustment of one of the pumps (sinking deeper in the rear) it caused a really big problem.

The reduced water flow and additional heat got the tank hot (29.8) which is hot hot.
It was a pretty frantic moment of removing, changing, swapping and modifying with what I had laying around but I got it all sorted. I actually managed to make some significant modifications that actually increase the water flow significantly (Red Sea Quotes theirs originally does 1150lph) and now I get 1550lph. Albeit minus a spray bar but the extra water movement is really pumping and has let me relocate my powerhead to blow to the back of the corals (there was a few dead spots where my star polyps especially really disliked the lack of flow but that's where I wanted the corals).

The tank before sat at around 26.8, it got to just under 30 and NOW it is sitting at 25.2!!!!!!!!!! HOORAY
I am so stoked and to say there is a different in the corals is an understatement (my cat looks MUCH better). I didn't lose anything except all the shrimp I caught at Hillarys Marina which I feed to the corals anyway and froze the rest for food.

Pictures time

#329422 Marine Shrimp

Posted by Blakey on 16 October 2014 - 10:49 AM

I was always fascinated by shrimp tanks in the freshwater side of the hobby and never considered it as apart of the marine side of things, until now.
I fricken LOVE my peppermint shrimp and in the 3 weeks I have had them they have grown HUGE and are the most vibrant red. They are hilarious to watch running around feeding and everyone is always excited when they notice one hiding in the caves.

So I think I'm going to get my shrimp on and shrimp it up and turn my tank in to a shrimpalicious shrimp haven.

I am getting a pair of bumble bee shrimp and Saron shrimp in a couple of weeks and will see how I go with them if all goes well I just might bite the bullet the get some of the blood shrimp or the red line cleaner shrimp.

What's everyone's thoughts on shrimp in the marine tank?

What are some ideal scaley tank mates?

#329190 Moulting Crustaceans

Posted by Blakey on 13 October 2014 - 10:02 AM

Yes I am definitely testing on a regular basis still.
Calcium sits at 450 ppm and my hardness sits just under 3 so I dose with a small amount of KH Coraline Grow each time I top up or change water.

I thought everything was dying but now am under the knowledge that's these creatures all moult.
In a week I thought I had lost a shrimp, two crabs (I didn't know I had) and a hermit crab.
Seems they have all just done a group moult.. Mass moultings.
Is this a sign of good or bad water?

#328991 Blue Tangs

Posted by Blakey on 09 October 2014 - 08:30 PM

So I have come to the conclusion that Dory is actually an accurate portrayal of a Blue Tang.
They are the dumbest and most disappointing fish ever, other than the fact it has done exactly what I wanted it to do in cleaning the upper parts of my coral, it is a stupid and very idiotic fish.
It sleeps in a 'bed' and it's the exact same spot every night. It pretends I can't see it, even though it is bright blue and yellow. It's acts dead even though it is very much alive.. It's a very 'special' fish.
I don't know how I'm going to catch it but if anyone wants to swap for some gobys or clowns or fire fish let me know Ahah cause I don't really like it.

Massive Updates

- RO unit today
- tunze 9002 I get Saturday

- nitrates, ammonia and phosphate held steady for 2 weeks so I have introduced some Corals.
2 x Small ZOA clusters
1 x Hammer Coral
1 x Orange Mushroom (single Head)

My Green plate is fine now and my purple xenia is going great guns. A whole bunch of other corals have grown on the like rock I got.

Inhabitants now are
Clean Up Crew
7 x hermit crabs
5 x Turbo Snails
3 x Strombus Snails
1 x Burnt Sausage Cucumber
1 x Red Furry Starfish
5 x peppermint Shrimp

1 x Blue Tang (Temporary)
1 x blue Chromis
1 x Firefish

- notes

My clean up crew rocks. I had massive problems with the algae for a bit and was stressing (mainly on the sand bed) so the Strombs fixed it all up. The tank is absolutely immaculate and I am now feeding every couple of days and leaving the lights on much longer than I was as the CUC manages the algae and sediment.
There is a few ornamental looking crabs in there, a pistol shrimp a couple of abalone all small and hiding in the live rock that I got.
The tank looks absolutely amazing and I'm sure will get better with the change to RO water.

I had one Chromis kill the other 2. Pecked them to death so they went in the bin. I added a blue tang to graze the coral for the time being and it has done exactly what I needed it too.
Added the Firefish yesterday.

Got lots of little pieces of coral instead of one big pieces, so I can learn about a few different pieces at one time and experiment with them. Apparently my green plate coral is a little more difficult to keep than I thought but it is doing great now and feeding well so these new additions should be a breeze.

I got tons of photos but I can't post them from my phone (in app or via the mobile site or full site) just keeps coming up with an error.

I have added love stock now all beit a little early but they seem to be loving life! And it will keep the missus happy.

Tank now has
3 x Chromis
4 x Snails
1 x Hermit Crab
1 x Bivalve

Also got a FRICKEN HUGE starfish ( my girlfriend picked up a tub of bits and piece from a lady for $40 ) I need to get rid of it. It's a Green Bristle Star. It's just too big for my tank.

Also found a crab in the rocks - he blends in so well you can hardly see him. Looks like the actual rocks.

Pretty sure I saw a little baby green nudibranch today on the glass as well.

Photos to come but the tank will go unchanged for the next 4-6 weeks
