Damn It! I got involved with a thread the other day that bought back some cool memories of my time keeping marine tanks. i got to yabbering about Port Jackson sharks. Since then I havent been able to shake the urge of setting up a honkin' big marine tank for a Porty.

Has anyone ever really successfully kept one?

Haha. Niceeee.

Not sure but Pet Magic Cannington had one on hold at their shop for about 3 months. So I guess they know how to look after them if anything.

Yeah Long term these things get seriously BIG! If I get one I would want it "for life" not just until it gets too big for a normal 'ol 8x3x3. Once they get biggish the only option would be to upgrade to a massive tank or to release it... And Yes I know releasing aquarium fish into the wild is naughty.

Haha sorry if that was my thread malawiman!

I know there's a marine place up NOR that used to stock them. Love the PJs, also seen a few catsharks around the traps too :)

splnteredmind beat me to it, was going to suggest cat shark family,i think their beautiful to.Smaller maximum size and really cute. Have never kept either but bumped into lots of both over the years whilst diving/ recreational fishing and during my time in the professional fishing industry [ always treated them with great care/reverence. TRY BEING A FISH LOVER ON A PRO VESSEL, short career! ] Dont know the ethics or legality of wild caught but a few years ago they were a semi regular? bycatch in the sound and gage roads if fishing small at night. If any one has ever worked a trawler they would probably tell you to save 1.Pjs and Larrys mates were a real pain in the butt when i worked on a cray boat in 77/78 but i still loved them.

Probably. But work never got anyone anywhere, right?
Some interesting catsharks. They dont look as good as porty's but probably a better long term option.

Just the size mate. Portys grow to 4 - 5 feet. Id need an 8x8x3. I could do that with ply, fibreglass and stainless steel but thats a ton of water that needs to be changed weekly. Maintaining a 5000+ litre marine tank realistically wouldnt end well.
