without going into detail - how? .... hard to breed this sort at the best of times.... and why produce hybrids? are not the original species just as salable as these perhaps? Help us identify these fish, don't jump to conclusions.

well the way the fish are fish farmed and the way the eggs and sperm are harvested is very easy to get crosses witch is no big deal if you dont breed them and only use them as displays.

mabe you cant find out what they are cause they are cross breeds just my two cents

and its a posibilty or im sure it would of came up by now its looks like every ones elses is just clutching at straws jumping to conclusions

where to me it looks like a combinations of two or more biggrin.gif

the good old mystrey bag as i said befor you got to love them i do

cheers shane

These fish turn up every few years, in the 80's they were known as Lace Synodontis. Nobody could name them for sure, some of the names put forward were S.nigrita S.macrostigma and S.robbianus.

I can say that when I first saw them there were several Syno robbianus mixed in with them, now in a separate tank, so this might give insight into which river they originate from (just a guess - look at which rivers robbianus comes from and that will narrow the list down)
They are also bigger than what they where when I first saw them , so this would indicate that they are a larger spp, as compared to the robbianus, they only grow to 17cm and they are now only half the size of the unknown Syno.

Pretty interesting thread - still looks like a featherfin to me LOL.

Terry

Other than pointing out to you that you are showing your age as well as a good memory, are you able to elaborate on what you said?

Pete
It's not even close to a featherfin, look at the dorsal fin.
I had about a dozen of these fish in the early 80's all of them got to about 7'' each time they turn up lots of names get put forward. We will probably never find out what they are unless somebody does a scientific study on all the Synodontis species.
I suspect that they are from West Africa and would do better in river conditions rather than Rift lake set ups.

LOL Terry

I only know two cats - common BN and cuckoos and not even those too well.

Cats aren't my thing thus my poor guess.

 Hey guys don't know if this is the correct ID but I have just found in a book a catfish called the Jaguar Catfish. It has two other names listed, one common name which is "Morrowi" catfish and its scientific name is Liosomadorus oncinus
It seems to originate from Brazil, reaches 150mm or 6" in length

The following is a link to Planet catfish where i have discovered this. It says it can reach 10"....

The markings on it are a little more defined on this fish, totally not a synodontis tho' but the name is Jaguar catfish.

Take a look at the 2 in the dish....

Anyway have a look peoples and tell us what you think

Thanks for the help Snowy,

However the eyes on those cats seem to far forward. I originally found this catfish and quickly disregarded the ID as I felt the markings and location of the eyes makes it an implausible match IMO.

I was moving these into a larger tank today, and one of them was making a sound similar to a penguin or ?, definately a distress call. This is the first time I have ever heard a fish make a noise.

Definately something interesting, and next time I try to catch them I will record the sound.

Most of the Syndontis will make a sound when handled. One fo the common names for S. eupterus is featherfin squeaker, S. decorus Clown Squeaker.
