Hi Guys,

Decided to make myself a ceramic cave today. Bought a 80c pot, split it using an angle grinder. The cut the bottom off on one of the halves. Visited my LFS and got a scrap piece of glass. Pulled out the old aquarium safe silicon and glued the halves together.

Its currently setting atm, and will head back to the lfs to remove excess glass tomorrow.

Current cost to me so far is 80cents and my time.

careful when cutting ceramics with a grinder breathing in that dust can cause allot of problems. try hosing it at intervals or dipping it in a bucket.

When I made my cat caves I used a hacksaw laugh.gif

Takes abit longer but makes less dust.

Sorry for the newbie question, but why did you glue glass on to it and not just stick it straight in the tank? Weight issues? Scratching?

Ahrain, the use of glass allows you to ease the cave up and see if there are any eggs/fry in there without disturbing the male too much..
Works for me. biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

I am now trying the black poly retic pipe at 4 & 5cm diameter. Cut to length, cut lengthwise, I am trying glass, 5mm perspex & slate on the base glued with silicon, this is because the black poly will float and something is needed to weigh it down.

Will let you know how it goes.

If successful I will bring some to the April meeting.

if you want something natural looking... it takes a hell of a lot of time... BUT, if you got a pressure cleaner and a big piece of lime/sandstone, have at it with a karcher from close range. i did with on of mine, although the rock was already tunnel-ish, so there wasnt much to blast... but again, RECYCLE WATER, main one, and it takes a long time

all silicon is water proof, but only some silicons say if they are aquarium safe.
