Check it I did a tank with no natives.

I like planted tanks but this is the first time I've made more than a half arsed effort. The tanks been running maybe three weeks I think with the latest additions going in about a week ago.

I have used the girliest fish I could find... (Old forum joke... don't get upset).

- Neon tetras

- Harlequin rasboras

- Albino B/Ns

- Golden Halfbeaks - The only oddballs I allowed myself for this tank.

- Ninja Shrimp

Thinking about Celestial Pearl Danios... They are super nice little fish.

I also used a bunch of plants that will only deteriorate with time so I thought I should get a pic or two up while they still look alive.

I've got two 2ltr DIY CO2 setups cranking away.

Using an AquaOne TropicalGlo LED that I picked up 50% off in a Pet Stock Sale.

Substrate is ADA Malaya.

Going to hack the Monte Carlo down more this weekend.

So Plant guru's what have I done wrong? Have I done anything right might be the better question...

Looking nice! How have you set up the diy CO2? I've always thought they looked a bit of work? Will be interested in how you find the substrate as have never used that.

I'm no plant guru, but I really like the look of the greenery against that substrate. I usually use black substrate, so haven't really seen that ADA stuff before.

half beaks are so cool - nice addition!

Should add some chocolate gourami's too, there a gorgeous small fish! Maybe I love them because they remind me of Leaf fish and bush fish :(

Thanks Jase  but yes, ever....

I have a friend with 2 chocky gouramis, but I haven't seen them in a LFS or on the lists for a long time, shame, because they are gorgeous and interesting little fish. Maybe a sponsor can chime in here on availability.

Jule's and his quest for bush fish... One of the all time great PCS sagas.

CO2 is 2 x 2 litre bottles each with a 1 litre bubble counters. They are independent of each other and just means I can get more CO2 to more of the plants.
I didn't like the Malaya substrate initially but I probably prefer it to the darker soils now. Hopefully won't see the substrate in 2 months time.

I like the half beaks, really different and perfect tank mates for the girly fish.
This tank has been a bit of fun. Hope it stays algae free.

Is the CO2 from the yeast method? I had read of the citric acid method and wondered if anyone had done it.

Apparently the citric acid / bicarb soda method can be switched off at night. Found discussion on this below. Had a thread on method will see if I can find it again.

And method I found?

Would love to know if it could work.

Should add some pencil fish MM, or head standers!!

Always loved the idea of a planted tank with mini oddballs.

Been thinking about pencil fish. If the tank was a bit bigger I would throw some red lines in... They are HOT!

your tanks gonna look really good in a few months after a few trims and the carpet grows in, i love neons but i never manage to keep them without them getting some kind of cotton mouth or some other weird disease.

on the availability of chocolate gouramis, i called vebas, aquotix and morley and also sent some emails around,

once in 2014 and once on  01 November 2016

Responses:

from morley,

Hi, wed do see chocolate gouramis every now & again, but I have not seen any on the list for ages. Not sure if this is due to the new biosecurity measures or simply none around.

aquotix

Choc Gouramis are difficult to import - so Im glad you have lost interest in them...

ive been chasing them for ages,

Nannostomus Beckfordi look amazing there my current mid/high water stock  / breeding project atm
