Hi mate,

They are great aquarium fish.
they cant be bred in aquariums, for that you would need a sizeable pond and hormone injection.
Ill upload a couple pics tomorrow when I jump on my computer.

Great fish but they need a big tank to themselves and lots of food.

Murray Cod don't actually require hormone injection.

They have been bred in dams using an old 44 gallon drum as a cave.

Yes, Andrew is right, they do breed in dams but a dam is a long way from an aquarium, backyard pond, etc... You wont get a translocation permit for release into a dam.

Technically to import cod into WA at all you need an approved translocation permit from fisheries. To breed, grow out or resell you are required to have an aquaculture permit... even though you may not be doing it on anything like a commercial scale.

I Say technically because a lot of people do import them without a permit :-)

Murray Cod are not commercially bred locally, though there are supposed to be a few small wild murray cod populations in WA waters and there are definitely farm dams about that most likely have breeding cod in them.

That sucks, sorry to hear it. There have been a few people from this forum lose jacks in the last 12 months. I nearly lost mine a few months back... API algaefix... Only just got him right, I thought he was brown bread, almost fed it to my barra but thought id give him a few more minutes in another tank. Sure enough he came right.

How you going tracking down a cod?

Its a lot of tank and money to dedicate to a single fish but i'd love to have a +2 foot Murray Cod in a monster tank...

Only want a 4 footer for the first 18 months - 2 years. Bigger than that is a waste, they arent super active fish especially as juvies they spend nearly the whole day parked up in their snag.

4x18x18 will be fine, 4x2x2 will be suitable for a little longer. I've got a cod thats 10 months old @ 20cm in a 4x18x18. Im quite sure he will be more than comfortable in there for the next 6 - 12 months. If he grows a bit quicker than expected, ill just chuck him in a bigger tank. Just give the cod a few different snags and he will be happy a s a pig in ....
Ive got part of my tank planted with vallis, some big rocks in the other corner and a fairly open area in between with a mangrove stump in the middle. Having a few different snags makes the fish more confident that it can hide if it feels threatened. This makes it less likely to hide all day.
