#367809 Anyone For Chocolates? - Sphaerichthys Osphromenoides That Is.

Posted by Bombshocked on 31 October 2020 - 10:57 PM

i love my small fish in a heavily planted tank,

the green plants are anubias, i have a few variety's ive picked up over the time, the one pictured is coffeefolia, and the leaves are indeed loquat leaves, i have a tree that i planted a few years ago along with a guava tree that i get leaves from for the tank also, sadly the guava is not doing as well as the loquat,

my tank has cardinal tetras i picked up from morley aquariums along with the 2 chocs, and kuhli loaches, Otocinclus and a few Nannostomus beckfordi, i think they could all take the low ph, and im very interested in the seachem acid buffer ill check it out next trip to the store

i was using the pencil fish as dithers when appisto breeding but i found them to grow on me over time and became more interesting so after a few generations with the apistos, i was more interested in the pencil fish, they bred well in a low ph tank around 5 with very minimal light over a thick bed of java moss and not alot else

ive noticed the chocolates going into crazy positions to get through the bucehlandra leaves and pick out food i love watching them, i think chocs in a small school 6-12 could take the center of a well planted 4 footer with a nice school of about 50 rasboras or ember tetras a few kuhlis on the bottom for cleanup heaps of wood and leaves would be awesome

Wow, Amazing pictures and write up thanks, i love choc gouramis, im keeping 2 at the moment with some cardinal tetras in a planted tank, running rain water at about 100 tds, PH is around 6 from the aqua soil and they seem to do nicely, but do enjoy it when i lower the ph on water change day, as a breeder im guessing you must have a solid way of reducing your ph safely would you use peat moss in the filter to lower it or just a commercially available PH down solution ive tried to use almond leaves, Loquat leaves, and guava leaves but it didn't have a strong enough buffering effect to lower the PH to an acceptable level against the aqua soil

your tanks look very clean and well laid out, i like the floating plants a lot, and the health of your fish speaks for it self, posts like these are what make forums my favorite type of media so thank you for posting it and giving me a good read, detailed information like this is excellent

one day i would love to setup a species only tank for them and get a few more but at the moment thats not on the cards, there a super niche fish and im really glad someone else finds them as special of a fish as i do

Thanks

Nice, looking forward to some pics of the planted oddball tank, sounds interesting, birchirs are an awesome fish, ill be keen to see how u set the hardscape up for them.

ive just ordered a new tank as well its 1200l x 500w x 600d

I've never had a problem with the look of a lilly pipe, along with some smart pipe placement i don't have much trouble hiding them, so i have never had a tank drilled before, if you really dont want to see the inlet/outlet i think you can get a glass inlet and lilly pipe, but if you dont want to see anything inlet/outlet/pipes maybe drilling is the go?

as for lighting only growing anubias most 4ft planted led bars should cut it,

With 600 depth Don't get any 0.5W Leds they generally struggle to penetrate over 35cm of depth, you want (Edit:1-2w Per bulb somewhere between the 6k-7k spectrum, this is a Led bar i use on my 60L tanks (10+ lights and tanks) it grows anubias, Java Fern, Bolbitis(Regular And Mini) with a decent top cover of frogbit

http://www.z-aquatic...60cm-led-light/ this is a 2W bulb in this unit

im not saying buy or don't buy this brand, but its easy to see the Leds in this picture

so if the light Bar is 120w with 1w bulbs the MOST amount of actual Leds on the bar should be 120 (120 Led Lights x 1w = 120w Light Bar) if its 120w with 2w bulbs it will have 60 globes in it.

hopefully i didnt ramble to much and u can understand it the bigger wattage each LED is the more penetration of depth

and onto saltwater, im to scared to even look, the last thing i need is more tanks more fish and coral addiction

#357858 Fish Suddenly Dying? Please Help!

Posted by Bombshocked on 18 December 2016 - 07:49 PM

id say you called white spot on a fish that had nothing wrong with it and then destroyed your filter bacteria with the 2 types of meds in quick sucession,

in my oppinion that tank is overstocked to hell unless you do a crazy WC regime, but even with a crazy schedule (50% every second day) id imagine all these fish would be jostling and fighting for bottom space

Apisto agasizzi x1
Apisto viejeta x2
Apisto cacatuoides x1
Apisto agasizzi x1
Albino longfin bn x1

Royal Whiptails x5
Red whiptails x11

Cory Barbatus x5
Cory Black Venezuela x10

thats 37 caves

===========================================================================

Post from other thread,

last time i had white spot i just put tank to 30-32c no meds or salt worked a treat

edit:all the meds probably killed your filter bacteria

It has been found that Ich does not infect new fish at 29.4°C/85°F (Johnson, 1976), stops reproducing at 30°C/86°F (Dr. Nick St. Erne, DVM, pers. comm.), and dies at 32°C/89.5°F (Meyer, 1984), [1]

Posted by Bombshocked on 25 October 2014 - 06:18 AM

very nice man, let me just start by saying great looking tank, one or 2 more trims and the left hill should be thick,

these are just my opinions,

im thinking you could continue with the Althernanther Reineckii 'mini' along the left hand side to break the visual transition from the foreground to the background as you have done on the right hand side, it works perfectly
