WHOA $10 you say! my LFS if way over that mark they reocn there cheapest fish the common clown fish which they sell a pair for $50

Subasteve recommended the aquarium artists as been cheap and good for marine, but what store is this you goto?

hmmm, ok well maybe my recollection was incorrect then???

i dropped in at aquarium artists on thursday and they seemed to have quite a good selection and they seemed very helpful (had a great pair of red maroon clowns etc) but as far as saltwater i'm not sure they were the cheapest i had seen... and they are a bit far out unfortunately for me...

as i am only able to admire whats in the shops in terms of marines, i tend to visit pisces over in willetton and the perth aquarium and display centre to gaze at the tanks... :cry:

anyway, i'm, sure pisces had some marine fish for around $25 at a bare minimum, now whether the species/prices on the tanks were what was actually in them not sure, as i often see names on the tanks which are probably old or haven't been changed etc??? i thought i saw some types of damsels or was there a royal dottyback (beautiful yellow/purple fish i would love) for around $25 was there???

i could be mistaken, so if its a long way to travel you might just want to call them, but i find pisces has some much more reasonable prices than other places.... worth a visit if its not a hike and there open 7 days a week... (i should ask for a finders fee with a recommendation like this!!!)

It seems like i am great full of Craigs help and i will go with a damsel fish just to see if i like SW

After i am finished with it as the starter fish and if i do decide it get rid of it for a lionfish, you can have it casanova as a reward for a finders fee

Can i have a damsel fish in a 4 foot tank?

Wait actually i might just get a clown fish, in this book i have "the perfect aquarium" it says there the only easy to keep marine fish plus that way i have an excuse to buy a anemone something i can never pronounce

yeah the damsels look like tiny little things to me, i'd like to get a yellow tail blue damsel, or a blue deveil damsel (these names might not be absolutely 100% correct so forgive me), but like i said, when i start my reef tank eventually, i have to make sure all the fishes play nicely together, and are safe for corals and inverts, which i would eventually get...

and not sure where but i am sure i have seen a marine fish for like only $12.50 or so, one of the commonish ones, either at pisces or PAqDC...

yeah u should get a clownfish they rock they look cool to
i was in aqaurium artsit the other day and they had the nicest pair of clowns but they were like a dark red colour they looked really cool

well i am just a SoR type of guy so i'm sure there are plenty of reasonable places to visit, and even Veba's is probably great but a bit of a trip for me so haven't been there yet.... and after spending $50 travelling to all these places to get the "cheapest" fish, you probably could have just bought the expensive local one and probably saved money... but some places do have great ranges and also great display tanks which show u what are possible...

the anenomes i have read i think are harder to keep, needing cleaner water etc than just the fishes, but that's the thing about planning at the start what you want also in terms of lighting etc, so then you know what to buy ahead of time and save money in the long run...

i'd like some clowns (either percula or maroon), some damsels, this royal dotty thingy, maybe a blue or yellow tang, a six line wrasse perhaps, a few gobbies or blennies... and then there are these gorgeous peachy pink fish u see in the display tanks.... actually i'd better stop now....

On the lines of nemo do tangs and clowns even get along...? Tangs been the character "dorys" species.

So i could even just use a 3 foot i have right now for a attempt at keeping a coral and NEMO fish *cough* i mean clown fish

I live in Forrestfield which is just near kalamunda, we have quite a few local stores around but aquarium artists is close and if it offers good prices well worth the drive.

Vebas to me is like a holiday for fish, it is that far away that i would have to leave early in the morning so i could spend the WHOLE day there but i am sure i would be told to leave

yeah sxcsamman, that pair of clowns at aquarium artists were those maroon ones i was talking about, really good looking, but was a pair like $80 or $100 if i recall (my memory could be getting worse by the minute ) and i would probably just settle for a $40-50 pair of the orange ones... they had these nice looking shrimp too, but were they like $140 or so for one??? anyway it was over $100... 8O but before i get lampooned, i'm sure they are expensive to get in, and these poor stores have overheads etc.... I have to say again that they spent quite a bit of time talking to me, so they seemed like decent people with a good knowledge of what they were talking about....

as for what gets on together best to go ask on some forums nic, i visit petfish.net which seems like an american forum, but has some good mods and people who can offer you advice...

I also go to this place to get a bit of info, as well as some ideas on the ranges of fish out there, plus i think they might have a bit of a compatibility card for SW and FW fish... its US based as well, but like i said, gives u some idea of the possibilities out there....

I think you are better off asking SW questions at reefcentral.com rather then here. I think alot of people that have posted info in this thread are just regurgitating it off sites, with little to no SW experience.

Well me and Casanova are soon to establish a marine tank and although some of the info is from just a simple Google search it also helps to have people opinions and knowledge they have found by looking at LFS or talking to others.

Instead of me driving around all of Perth trying to find that cheapest clown fish people have just given me some names of shops and even some damsel fish and clown fish prices.

But as soon as i need species related information and if some people cannot give that i will try some other marine fish forums.

I wasn't bagging anyones information. But alot of people read topics and just google it, regurgitating info from the net with very little experience. This is a good site for cichlid info (hence perth CICHLID forum). You would be hard pressed finding more of a wealth of SW info then reefcentral. MASA is also a good aussie site.

Yes peckie, what cruel and uncalled for sentiments those were towards us budding SW devotees.... :? and i did suggest he go to some of the sites and get specific info, but if we have read it and passed it on, i don't think that is a big issue, good advice even 2nd hand is not to be pooh pooh'ed....

but i guess i'll be able to put it behind me.....

by the way i went again to aquarium artists and they had some green chromis there for $9.... they were smallish, but $9 isn't bad....

Ok sorry i didn't mean for a argument, i just wanted to clarify that i would accept all help big or small as right now i am a novice in the SW category. So lets put differences aside and get right back on track .

I am going to a pet shop tomorrow, is it lime sand or coral sand i am after? I rang up a LFS and i was told lime sand does it just the same... i think from memory 26kg was $22.

Does anyone know where i can get some of the sand that is used in marine tanks and at what price? Also is it best to just buy so many liters of salt water from a LFS (they charge 0.15c a liter) or goto the ocean and get some or just mix my own in that salt packs you can buy?

I know Money is tight but give Plascon a call, they have first grade 1000ltr tanks available for $180.00 and dennis at Ocean farm will fill it for $60 (not sure if that price is to the public, it may be $90), There is another mob that do it, i used to get 15,000 at a time for like $360.00 - thats cheap but its also alot of water

I just bought 2 30ltr containers from bunnings filled them up and did another trip with one 30ltr so i had 90 liters.

Are the 1000ltrs C.B.S's the store had this HUGE cbs that was filled to the brim and they just used this hose to fill peoples tanks. When i get my 6 footer in my living room ill consider getting a bit bigger container lol

Those 1000ltr containers, can they be used as a aquaponics tank. My older brother is buying a aquaculture 6000ltr tank for either barramundi or silver perch. (Fish is gonna become a everyday meal :roll: ) Could you just remove the lid to these 1000ltr containers and have fish in them?
