Codename Iotank

23 October 2016 - 03:58 PM

IoTank is my attempt at creating a smart, internet connected tank to automate and log tank activity.

This is going to take me a very long time but I will update this post as I go.

Tank Basics

The tank itself is a second hand 5ft that I've cleaned up and built a basic stand for. If anyone is interested in the stand design, let me know.

Next step

I'm currently designing a sump and eagerly awaiting my raspberry pi, relays, etc.

Sump Design And Filter Media

23 October 2016 - 01:57 PM

Hi guys, I'm in the process of designing a 100L sump for my 400L display tank. Im debating whether to use Hel-X fluidised for bio or Seachem Matrix. Wondering how loud a fluidised sump is and if I could fit enough media in a 40L space to support my tank. Obviously it depends on the fish I'm keeping but I can't seem to find the filtering capacity of Hel-X. On the other hand, with good mechanical filtration how often could I expect to clean Matrix media? Im planning to have a large isolation section for seperating my fish when necessary and would like to run some chemical filtration either in the sump or in a reactor.

Also really keen to see everyone's freshwater sump designs ;)

Gday From A Tropical Oasis

Hi all, I've been on this forum for a while now and have recently been getting a lot more serious about the hobby so I figure it's time to get to know the community. I'm currently focusing on haps and peacocks with a few of the more peaceful mbunu and am in the process of building a new display tank.
I'm hugely interested in creating smart solutions to common problems to save time and ensure the well-being of my Cichlids. In my latest tank I'm working to automate as much as possible and have it connected to the internet for control from anywhere and emergency alerts. I'll make a seperate post for anyone interested in following the project.
With my 2 month old twin daughters, Im unlikely to make it to any meetings or auctions for a while but nonetheless, a massive hello to everyone :D
