Reusable Wool Filter Media

28 January 2016 - 12:48 PM

Hi all,

I was just wondering if anyone could is aware or could recommend a reusable wool filter.

I keep going through little wool filters at 99c each or so....

There must be a material out there which is just as good as a mechanical filter which could be washed!?

There's this sort of thing for $4.40 but doesn't sound like it costs enough to be re-usable more than a couple of times.  And if you can only use it a couple of times... then I can't be bothered washing it and might as well pay the 99c each.

Am I talking crazy?

Missing Fish

27 August 2015 - 09:02 PM

I have a community 240L tank of Malawi's.  3 electric yellows, 4 electric blues (two males and two females - one is ready to spawn).  2 metriaclima pulpicans (kingsizei) and a few others with a total of 14.

The male kingsizei pwns half the tank.  The female held and released eggs about 3-4 weeks ago.  (coincidentally I noticed one fry has survived and found a nice little cave under the presence of the bigger male.)

I meant to say, all the fish in the tank are 2 1/2 to 3 inch max.

The female kingsizei has vanished.  I haven't pulled all the rocks out yet... but I'm 99% sure it can't be where I can't see.

Is there any chance she got eaten?

Astro (2212) Canister Filter Media Order

02 August 2015 - 08:47 PM

Hi again all,

For those with a Astro external canister filter, could you please let me know what order you place the media?  Trays?

Out of the box it has the media sitting in this order (top to bottom - which would also be the easiest to service)

A Wool filter/Black sponge

B Ceramic (Quartz Ring?)

C Bio Balls

On the pamphlet it's really messed up if you can make sense of this

Seems to show the filter wool and black sponge at the bottom?

So top to bottom - B, C, A

Anyone decided the optimal config?

Temperature For Malawis

27 July 2015 - 07:07 PM

Hi guys,

I'm after advice on what you keep the temperature at for your Malawi tank.

All the Malawi fish profiles say their preferred temperature is 24-27 odd degrees.

I heard at higher temps (27) their aggression increases also their activity and the amount they eat and waste they produce, so I aim around 26. But also know temps like 30 cure some diseases and could potentially be always set?

In winter the temp in my aquarium goes down at least 2 degrees overnight.

I have a thermostat heater which I don't trust it's calibration so I use two other thermometers in the water to monitor. And just edge the thermostat up and down. It's set to 30 but the water measures 26... So a heater which had an external thermostat would be ideal.

What is everyone's experience in the best temperature to have their Malawi's and any reason why? In winter do you aim a little higher temp or just let it dip over night.

Thanks in advance for the responses if I don't reply to each.

Elongatus Chewere - Not Happy

03 July 2015 - 08:48 PM

Hi Guys,

Not sure there's a direct answer for this but just sharing if others have the same experience.

I've got a Malawi community tank, all water parameters are pretty right.   About 15 fish in a 240L - all pretty small.  Healthy Electric Yellows, Electric Blues, Kingsizei (breeding), Blue Dolphin, Red Empress.

But I had a pair of Elongatus Chewere.  Had them for about a month, then the dominant male stopped eating, but looked healthy/normal/.  Died a week later after his starvation diet.  The femaie (I think) is still alive but constantly stresses me out by pacing up and down and lengthwise in the tank almost all the time.

I'm assuming the pacing means she's not happy the way she constantly seems to try and swim through the glass... up and down.  Not sure maybe if the totally dominant kingsizei with similar colouration has her freaked out.
