Recently purchased two little freshwater (I suspect they are actually brackish) puffer fish (9cm). I was told they were natives but the shop knew nothing much else about them. They were sold to me as Banded Puffer Fish but I suspect they are Marilyna Darwinii or something very similar. I'll try to get some photos of them tonight, very cool little fish and super active. For the mean time though heres a link i found on google of what they look like.

Does anyone know where these fish might have come from or have any information on them? Any other fish shops come across anything similar on their supply lists?

Wouldnt mind getting a couple more for a puffer display tank in the new place!

Small slightly brackish temporary tank at the moment, no tank mates yet as I'm not sure how narky they are quite yet. Will figure out something a bit bigger and more permanent after I've moved into my new place in a month or so.

How much mate? Was I correct with my ID or are they something different?

Terry, what environment do they suit? Brackish I know, but do they suit planted aquariums or would they destroy them.

Do these species grow large?

Ice - what size tank you looking at putting them in?

Not sure yet dude, probably a standard 4 foot, from what i've read they don't get too much bugger than 10cm. Also read that they will eat fleshy plants.

Will see how they go I suppose!

had some of these at midland, great little fish... was sad to see them go as its so much fun feeding them snails smile.gif i had a similar issue with the ID and i think my googling ended up with Marilyna darwinii as well, it sounds familiar anyway. if you think you have figured it out it would be nice info to know, you think the wholesalers would know these minor details lol

Haha I know I was the one that bought them smile.gif Pretty sure that's what they are but still not 100% sure. Shame about the suppliers not providing any information.

So how are they going? How brackish do you have the water?

I'm asking as I have MTS in a tank and have not yet got round to trying to reduce/remove them, but will probably do so soon. I might try my neosilurus ater out first, but after that I might be chasing one of these.

Lost one of them because it was already too thin when I got it and it got picked on by the others. The rest are going strong mate. Ive got nothing to measure salinity but it's not too salty, one heaped teaspoon per standard bucket of water. They seem to do fine in full fresh though.

I take it they don't play well with others?
