Looking for a cheap (but not nasty) option for putting a background in a tank Im going to set up. Looking at rolls of adhesive film, I can cover a 4 footer for about $5. Has anyone tried this?

Go the textured adhesive tiles at Bunnings, they look awesome, kinda wanting to give it a try myself.

So good I even copied a link for you.

Are they double sided? I don't want to put the background "in" the tank. Would stick on the back of the tank on the outside.

Bummer. I'll have a look at the stick on sheet to put on the outside and try and work out if it's double sided.

I picked up a roll of PVC self adhesive film from Bunnings for $4.50 this morning. Went with "cork" as it was the closest thing to a plain colour I could find. Thinking about going red aquarium soil so the colour of easy to grow green aquarium plants will contrast well against the colour of the background and the substrate. Although it could just end up a plain white colour on the back of the adhesive stuff. Still better than no background, or one of those stick on backgrounds that get moisture in them.

this is the soil I'm considering going with

Where were the rolls? I looked in Bunnings last night while getting a shifter but no luck.

Well tomorrow I’ll sort new lids for this tank, then will give the glass a good clean with white vinegar and a sponge. Then after a final rinse I’ll have a go at putting this background on. Will post photos once I’ve done it (unless it looks really bad).

Looks ok, but can tell it’s el cheapo
I didn’t want to have a 3d background taking up too much room in the tank

You can get fairly low profile 3D backgrounds?

I've seen people use both house and car window tint. Also frosted tint and with the frosted tint they use a backlighting with a red and yellow fluro light globe mounted at the back bottom of the tank to give it a sunset back lighting not bad looking at all and very different.

I’ve decided to stick with the plain background and probably won’t bother with a substrate/soil
Squeezed a dirty sponge from a filter in to the tank to cycle it, and have a couple of fancy goldfish cruising around the tank. Once it’s sysled and clean I’ll put a pair of blockheads in the tank.

There are some block heads available at city barn at the moment if you are interested they seem to have a lot of character.

I have 6 adult blockheads in my main display tank. Ended up with 2 pairs with fry and 2 spare females.
