As some of you may know brasiliensis have been running wild in Perth waters. They are capable of surviving in high salinity waters and temperatures around 10°C so if they make it to the swan there could be problems for Bream etc.
This beast was almost 36cm and a kg

im just curious. . did they find just one geo brasilensis or heaps..
all ive seen is the same pic of that one fish?
i reason i ask is, if their was more than one, and breeding their would be no stopping them, and would cause a huge problem for ecosystem.

wow. i was just just reading the pdf info on that link u provided..
thats insane the amount of geo's getting takin out of that river for studdies.. seems unreal.
it also states that the have been there for over 10 years. why has it been so long before studies are being shown to public?
maybe if something was done a while back there wouldnt be so many around now..
its a real shame its come to this.. sounds like a huge mess.

fisheries had an attempt to remove them in 2003 i think but was unsuccessful. The frehwater fish group has only recently been involved but with anything like this there is alot of red tape and money required. a new paper has been submitted and our data indicates they may only be breeding in a certain location so if we can remove them from there or contain them we should be able to stop the spread. Recently they have been found at another location 20km away from this one where they have been introduced again.

What's the point in giving out little bits of info, where is the new location and why do you say they have been reintroduced.
The same photo turning up all the time makes me a think the situation is being exagerated by fisheries.

my first post gives 2 links for more info? here is a direct link to a report. That is me in the photo and and that day from the one lake we pulled out 201 and i have nothing to do with fisheries i work at Murdoch University. The new location in 20km upstream at another golf course which has lakes that flow over a drop into a creek which connects to the swan. unless they can climb a 1.5m drop i dont see how they got in there.60 turned up in a fish kill in the swan with some bream the other week sooooo?

sorry to be a little pessimistic but the bream are doomed each year from the algae blooms that occur anyway!!!

do brasilliensis tolerate this sort of river polution / deoxygenation of the water from the algae blooms ???

on the downside we lose bream... if theres an upside brasiliensis do taste nice!!!! (so im told...im keen to try some to let ya know for sure!!!)

interesting readind in the report... i like the fact that mosquito fish (gambusia) make up over 80% of nearly all catches.... who introduced them???? bloody government of the day....

and it was noted stomach contents didnt contain any gambusia??? i would of thought they would of been nice tucker for the adult fish smile.gif

Local waterways full of cichlids would be terrible on so many levels. Very silly comment.

You'll be surprised how high some fish can jump!

I'm willing to give a hand in fishing these bad boys. And I'm sure many of us in these forums would give a helping hand to fish them out.

When you've said that 60 or so of these fish have turned up in a fish kill along with bream (in the Swan). Chances are that they have already taken up residence in the Swan...

Yes, in that case that is where you would be 'enjoying' them, because you would no longer be able to enjoy them at home.

Do your best and muster up some intelligence, before you continue to make yourself look like an uneducated oxygen thief.

You and other idiots like you are just one of the "stupid" reasons why it's getting harder and harder to import exotic species let alone the ones that have already been deemed NOXIOUS all together.

I have no doubt fisheries read this forum and when they see idiotic comments like yours it will only make them more determined to make it even harder for those of us that enjoy keeping the not so common species of fish. "Even those which cannot survive in our water ways".

So do yourself a favor and think before you open your mouth in future!

Sam
