I agree with all the above, I would love one, but the costs, maintenance etc and even the scare factor puts me off, a big enough black head still gets me anxious let alone a full grown olive - I've never even dealt or handled one myself! Dave - don't think you've posted pics of the Olive, come on........

I understand and respect the processes, but $300 a year with no involvement from DPaW seems steep. If they where coming to inspect the husbandry, well being and premises of the animal every 6 months I can understand the cost. I think the cost is more in place to prevent any Joe getting to that level.

The larger monitors are spectacular, but I feel they should be left in the wild, just don't seem like an animal that would adapt to captivity too well?

I buy all rats and DOC from pythonalia - seems a fair price and I end up getting stuck there for over an hour chatting away to Paul and Annette who will always show new snakes they've obtained or bred (which to say the least is very impressive). For this reason I'm not to concerned of the cost as I enjoy going there, mind you 8.50 for a medium adult rat is OK for my wallet, compared to some shops.

Alex- if you want to go halves in a  bag of DOC let me know, I think altona do 1000 for $60 or something ridiculous.

Side question, you guys remove the yolks etc form your chicks? I used to, but haven't for quite some time no and I only feed 1-2 chicks with every rat at feeds just to help fill them up (ive read they don't offer much to snakes interms of nutrition etc)

only prob is someone would have to collect then every comes pickups ASAP from the purchasers place, not many ppl have enough room to freeze 100 chicks, learnt that the hard way last time haha

My olive is still just a pup at about 1.6m. Shes long and slim and always hungry but handles fine once she realises shes not getting fed (which can take some convincing sometimes!). I've got a few large BHPs and only one is a handful but even then shes just full of hot air, we have a love hate relationship (I love her and she hates me). I'm away for work at the moment so no pics for you :)

I kind of agree that the price is more of a discouragement than anything else, there is an inspection (which incurs a fee anyway if they want to be pricks about it) and then after that there is very little other than monitoring your annual returns sheet. They really don't earn the money that we pay them at all, the whole system needs a big shake up as far as I'm concerned. Should all be done online with photographs of the animal so people cant swap crap animals for nice wild caught animals etc. Eastern states have a FAR better system and fee structure than WA but as always we are behind the unwilling to take a step in the right direction.

Big monitors can make great captives but I would never have one that wasn't captive bred these days, that goes for any reptile really except for the select few that aren't well represented in the hobby in WA like variegata and carinata and some locale specific animals like southwest womas and goldfields imbricata.

If i could keep a Perentie I would probably convert half of my back yard into an enclosure with 5ft glass pool fencing, I'd sell 90% of my other animals as to me that is the pinnacle, unfortunately we aren't allowed to keep them in WA for whatever reason.

I've never fed a DOC with the egg yolk attached as I rarely use them so I usually buy in small quantities, that being said there wouldn't be anything wrong with it provided the yolk hasn't started to rot. The only negative about DOCs (and I assume the yolk would probably make this worse) is the disgusting poo they do afterwards.

Did my 'weekly' check yesterday evening - everything seems to be going well. candled the eggs I could get too and all appeared viable and healthy (veins etc).

I know theirs quite a few reptile keepers on the forum, anyone else cooking eggs at the minute?

A mate of mine is building me a hatchie rack at the minute.

I have a clutch of Womas due in a few weeks. They were laid December 14 eta is approx Feb 5

I feed DOCs I'm happy to pray a premium for someone else to clean, sort, bag and freeze them. I try and buy them in "bulk" around 100 at a time. It works out around 60-70c ea so no real stress. It's mainly to try and offset my feed costs and supply issues I might have as I breed my own rats. The mice or on strike so they're bludging and not breeding :P

Female (Ripon Island Wild Caught I am told)

Male is captive bred from Pilbara Pythons (lineage unknown)

Fingers crossed for something weird out of this mix.

Might as well throw this in too :P

Womas don't do much for me but I like the cleaness on yours.

Pythonalia had some unreal patterned and gold and black headed womas was awesome, swung a little more to liking them haha.

I seen some one in WA has hatched a clutch of Womas this year and got spotted patterns amongst the mix, with banding stopping along the back line, unreal!!

Still around 2 weeks away. I tried to take a photo to show the stripes on an embryo but it's a bit too hard. You can see them :P

Cool photo, can see the banding coming through nicely. Nice veins in that egg too.

Long story short. My eggs hatched earlier this week. I won't show each neonate because I don't want to hijack the thread. They look good these are 2 of my favourites atm. They've entered preslough so look a bit shabby atm,

Awesome little hatchies, well done!

I put together my rack on the weekend with the help of a mate. Turned out really well. Made the tubs fit nice and snug to avoid the use of lids. Rack is run off two thermostats - these are simple on off thermostats (habistat), I may change these to pulse thermostats later down the line (easy switch over), but at the moment the tubs seems to be holding heat very well at the hot end. Getting a nice constant 32-32.5C. Each thermostat controls a heat cord each. We attached the top shelf for a bit of storage and to do 'work on' but this can easily be removed and more levels for tubs added if need be later down the track.

Very nice job on the rack  makes it so much easier when you have all the correct tools and knowledge available

Thanks for the comments.

I can't take too much credit - as a good mate of mine had all the know how and tools. I just put a plan together and we got to work. Actually took us ages to complete, started at 8am and didn't finish until almost 7pm. If we make another, the time would be greatly reduced. Also because I wanted a lidless system the room for error with shelving heights was minimal. The routing for the heat cord also took a decent amount of time. All in all though has come up a million bucks.

Hatchies started to emerge this morning!

3 pipped on their own and I have made a small flap in the rest for them to emerge from. All eggs that I have made an incision into appear to have healthy little hatchies inside, a couple even immediately poked their heads straight out for a look.

Happy days.

Thanks mate. Ended up hatching on day 54 at 30.8C

Looks like all the viable eggs have healthy hatchies inside - still have one or two viable eggs at the bottom of the pile to pip when I get home. Will also pip the mouldy egg to see if something miraculously has survived inside it.

Congrats on the SWCPs Alex.

I'm tempted to share a recent acquisition but not sure if I should hijack this thread or find the other one :P

Sajica - thanks mate.

Ended up with 15 healthy hatchies from 16 eggs. One egg turned bad about mid way through and moulded up. But 15/16 is a great result for a snake breeding amateur like me.

I don't mind if you post in this thread or create another mate, up to you.
