Got my first juvie Saratoga today off gumtree and his tail seems a bit stumpy? Not sure if it's just how they are or not ? Any thought?

Sorry about lighting best I could do

Maybe a little bit of fin rot and it just needs to grow back? I have seen something like that on a BN my brother gave to me (he wasn't looking after it well)

Ok cool thanks for reply
Do I need to treat or will it just grow back with time?

Ensure your water conitions are stable and WC weekly and it should slowly grow back. I don't think you'll need to treat.

Maybe if anyone else can comment to confirm?

Is this the toga on gumtree that was kept with Pbass, murray cod, etc??? If so, odds are he has been bashed.

if the tail end is split and shredded looking it is most usually a result of a fight or conflict.

In this case, give the right water conditions (good filtration, stable ph and temp etc, regular water changes) itll recoup most likely.

if the tail isn't split, id say that it is just a stumpy tailed jardini.

they are rather tough and forgiving fish in my experience. Don't forget, keep the tank well covered!
