where is a good spot to land a couple of nice sized dhufish ?

Good questions. I can't find any good sized ones lately. Mostly a bit either side of legal.

Got most species sussed, but dhu are always a tough one for me.

What Buccal has suggested is a good start. I do most of my fishing about 5-10km off the west end of Rotto.

Anyone else fishing the Calamari classic this weekend?

Me and a mate competed in the calamari classic the weekend just passed. Did alright considering the trying conditions. The water was very murky, due to the recent storms and the swell and wind were up, especially early on. We took his tinny out instead of my boat so it was impossible to get out to our deeper spots, so fished some shallow water (<5m) in cockburn sound. This was our first classic and finished 4th overall from memory (26boats, many more registered I think but got scared off the weather).

The boys who won did very well and were deserved winners. One thing I did notice is you could tell who had competed before. As the competition is 10 heaviest squid then the largest single squid. We treated our squid as we normally would, catch them, let them expel all their ink and water and straight onto ice. Others were keeping them alive in water then whacking the straight into the weighing bag immediately before weigh in so they would be full of water. Cheeky tactic, and something we will surely keep in mind for the next classic. Great day. Got to talk to and trade tactics with some other squid fisherman, so thoroughly enjoyed myself.

Bought this jig the other day. Always funny to read the English on some of the Japanese squid jigs, but this one takes the cake! makes absolutely no sense. How hard is it to get someone who speaks English to read over it and make sure it makes sense before you print thousands of boxes!?

Weather is looking glorious this saturday (touch wood), so will be heading wide for some demersals on saturday.

Gero is the capitol of big dhu fish. I don't catch anywhere near enough dhu on bait to bother with jigging. Fishing in Perth metro waters can be challenging enough at times.

Went out yesterday. Were pinged by about 5 other boats over the course of the day. One dude set up right in our drift probably about 20m from us. Nobody owns the ocean, but common courtesy often goes out the window. I work hard for my numbers, with lots of trial and error and sounding around, and to have clowns come straight for you and clearly steal your numbers and ruin your drift is a major annoyance, even saw these clowns catch a dhu that was clearly undersize, gaffed the poor bugger and proceeded to high 5 each other! Gave em a nice mouthful, but they pretended like they couldn't hear me. Should have lobbed some big leads at them instead.

Did ok yesterday, all the usual suspects. Red throat emperor, breaksea cod and a decent pinky. Had a school of 5-7kg sambos move in at one stage, landed quite a few between us. The first one had me convinced I was onto a nice dhu! bugger.

Still a good day on the water bro! Looks like it wasn't too rough out there too. I went down to my tailor spot in mandurah this morning and got a few on light gear. Good fun as a nice bend in the rod, bit too much swell and wind to get out the fly rod unfortunately! Those sambos would be great on light gear/fly!

They are even good fun on heavy gear. Came from 60m + of water. So light gear is out of the question when you need a big lead to hold bottom.

Good size tailor?

Only got to go out on the boat twice in two weeks. But it was for work so can't complain.

Will be going up there again soon. Love it up there

Me and a mate went out last Sat. 2 Dhu's, 2 baldies (one of my fav fish), few KG's (my other fav fish), and late in the day hoked into a school of small sambo's for some lighter line sport.
Was spewing, thought the first sambo was a big dhu from a secret dhu spot of mine. Broke my heart when I saw that brown body come up.

Very nice mate. Ive never caught a lemon shark. Do you get them in metro waters? Ive seen plenty up shark bay steep point area but not around here.

Cheers Waxy, those were all in Exmouth they do seem to be quite a common catch up there. As far as I know they're not found in metro waters but I could be wrong. The lemons behave very differently to other sharks once you get them on the beach, was a battle to get them to keep still they constantly try to twist an roll on the spot compared to bronzies and tigers which mostly just sit there

Was nice to catch a new species but they're fairly low on the target list, was happy but disappointed at the same time. Pretty sure I hooked a few 4-5m Tigers that there was no stopping on 30lb
