Hi all,

Picked up some new fish yesterday.   Didn't take them long to get busy haha!

This was after a few hours in their new tank.

Update on the eggs.

They are slowly hatching one by one, a few days apart.  So far 5 have hatched.

Interestingly, one of them actually hatched in the main tank and I found him swimming around the surface.  So that means the egg survived all this time, over 20 days and hatched.  But then, was also left alone by the other fish.

They are so tiny, but their mouths are big enough to take freshly hatched brine shrimp straight away :)

And a shot of dad cos he's awesome :)

He's trying to get to the brine shrimp on the bottom of the box lol.

Again fantastic shots Ronny. Love the shot of dad, his eye is in focus as are some of the BBS which are his target. :)
Are you using something like a 100mm macro lens for these or are you lens stacking or something?
Or just a decent zoom lens with macro function?

Very nice pictures Ronny! :)

Good job on breeding them.

How many males have you got?
What's the intra-specific aggression like?

Thanks :)

I got 13 of them and only 1 of them was a male so not sure what male to male aggression is like lol.

The male is non stop with the females though.  When I first got them, I was worried he would die of exhaustion from chasing them all day.

lol I have heard the same thing from few people, and a friend who also has got 15 of them.

Strange enough, he also has got 1 male and 14 females, I wonder if it is just a coincidence, or maybe people keep males for display tanks? or even if the hatch rate of babies has higher percentage of females?

Would be interesting to see how many males/females you get from your spawn! :)

Keep us posted!

From reports around the world and what I  was told by the breeder, the batches seem to be female heavy.

No one knows why yet but will be interesting to see what my guys turn out to be.

I suspect if I removed the Synodontis petricola from the tank, there would be a lot more eggs to pick out lol.

Ah, excellent thank you. Makes sense to use a macro lens. Been a while since I did any serious fish photography, so will have to fish out a macro lens in the future. Thanks again Ronny. :)

Few have hatched and seem to be eating well :)

There's also a few more eggs on the bottom :)

Love them, awesome little fish. How long do you reckon until you can sex them? Wonder if you have any little boys in amongst that lot?

Not sure?  Probably 3-4 months.

Hopefully there is at least one so I can send a group over to someone ;)
