Yeah, I was thinking that the smaller the fry the better at this point. I have the BN in at the moment with about 3cm fry, but not getting any action from them.

I am far from an expert, but I have read somewhere that once the carbon absorbs too much junk it releases it back into the tank en masse, which could be causing some of the issues.
I would recommend not using carbon unless you are trying to strip the water of medication, and put something like SeaChem Matrix in there instead.
Perhaps someone with a tad more experience can either back me up or dispel a myth regarding the carbon issue.

Where did you source the rocks from? I had a look at some garden stores locally today, and they didn't have anything close to what I wanted.

Painting it is easy. Buy spray can , remove lid , point in direction of pipe and push button problem solved
Most paints struggle to adhere to PVC. Even the one that do are very easy to scratch off.
Never tried pond sealant, now I wish I had.

I looked everywhere for black PVC when I was doing a project for work. Seems pretty readily available from the US for a couple of hundred bucks in shipping, but nowhere in Australia.
The closest I could find was a grey from Mitre 10, but that was a light grey and not a whole lot different to the white. And getting paint to stick to PVC is another problem on its own.
Unfortunately for me I was looking for 90mm so poly wasn't really an option for me. I think you would be far better sticking with the poly pipe and save yourself a lot of hassle.
