Hey guys, I have a problem, my female Venustus cichlid spat out her fry when I was netting her. Luckily all but one egg was spat in the net, however when I went to put her into a breeding net with the eggs (small fry with yolk) she sucked them up and I am 99% sure she ate them! I am aware that they can pull the fry to the back of her mouth but there is literally no bulge and I even looked down the cichlids mouth too and nothing. it is her first time breeding so I am not sure if she was aware if they were her babies or food! Is this a common occurrence or is there something I am missing? never had this before!

pretty normal for the female to spit when netted, some pick them up some eat them up

if she spawns in future you will most likely have the same experience and need to  .............................

if they are heads and tails they will be fine in a fry saver ...... NOT a fry net as they will get eaten through the net

if they are eggs then you will need to tumble them

plenty of vids online showing milking females of eggs

Thx for that, It ended up eating them, I have milked them in the past and made my own tumbler so I will try that next time.
