hand feed!,mmmmm........... tried this once before and the fish drew blood dry.gif , it's got nice little set of choppers.i'll grab a couple of photos later. oh yeah thanks goldern dase for the info, would beef heart do?

Yeah, but remember...only in very small quantities! Every so often, give them 1 or 2 small feeder fish to chase and gobble up, such as white cloud etc.. They'll appreciate it! smile.gif

Yeah, flowerhorns are not kept for their beauty... tongue.gif

They're a "character" type of fish... similiar to Oscars. They're also mainly kept in asian countries for "good luck/feng shui".. similiar to arowana. smile.gif

Hey Steve nice looking fish, what happened to the little one you photographed a while back when you tested that fish food? is this the same fish?

Personally I prefer the natural strains but I am still a flowehorn fan, although I dont keep any ATM I like the look of many of the varieties coming out, seen some nice looking red texas a while back.

Its funny but I bet most of the people who knock flowerhorns dont have a problem with all the people who crossbreed discus. rolleyes.gif

Yeah, weird.... some people are against crossbreeds etc... but they're interested in "crossed-cichlids". lolz

Flowerhorn = crossed-cichlids (breed from 3 different cichlids by a group of malaysian aquarist).

and you're right in saying some of the newer flowerhorns are cool. the "old ones" that caused all the rage in asia, were ones with huge humps on their foreheads. Now the craze is about the colouring etc..

Cheers.

it isn't the cross breeding that bothers me... it is just the look of them...

The ones that Tucunare posted are ok, but some of those other ones with head bulges bigger than their bodies just don't do it for me.

Yeah I totally get that bro,

that is not naturally occuring in these fish though....(they do get nuchal humps.... but many American cichlids do!)
they get this over large hump by feeding special fatty foods, keeping the fish in "Close Quarters",
and by what I have heard as a special tickling of the head they do when "playing" with the fish....
Otherwise the fish will only grow to have a normal american cichlid style nuchal hump!!
The reason why they make them get bigger humps is bacause those fish demand higher prices in Asia!!

hope this helps understanding with a bit of background knowledge on the hump!!

The flowerhorns with "large humps" are the "old ways" when the rage first started. These days, it's colouring that demands high prices. Singular colours with "noticable letters/markings" on the fish demand incredible prices in Asia. I like them because of their nature though.... more tame-able than an oscar! But watch your fingers when you pet them... tongue.gif
