It's Just A Fish...

19 January 2010 - 10:14 PM

It's been a while since I posted on here, so I will kick start something up.

Sorry if it offends but this one holds dear to me.

A close friend of mind recently had a sick goldfish. That's right a goldfish, it was dying. Nothing anyone can do about it, given that when a fish gets sick, it is sick and the survival rate is minimal. So I suggested that she go to this certain shop, and ask for advice. Nothing wrong with asking as it is free and it is not gospel that the advice will help the fish live. She understood this and so she went.

When she got there, she asked for advice and she got a really bad forecast on what was going to happen. So she burst out into tears. It's naturally for her, as she really loves all animals and fish, and she put her heart and care into all pets of her, whether it is a dog, cat, rabbit, fish or horse. What ticked me off (when I found out) was the person at the shop (shop assistant/whatever) made the comment "It's just a fish" She cried even more. As she felt silly for loving a fish.

Let me tell you, there is nothing wrong with that, just because it is a fish, a gold fish doesnt meant that it is not a living creature. Everyone holds different value of a living thing. You may hold your cat in a higher regard that a fish, I dont. For me, I dont care about cats, and if I made a comment about your dead cat "it's just a cat" that's just insensitive. Of course this applies to your parents, siblings, relatives and friends. You may value them a lot more, but to me, who are they to me? Nobody so should I comment on "it's just your mum" ? "it's just your son"

Yes, it's just a fish, but please show some sensitivity when you work in a fish shop. Otherwise if it is just a fish, and fish is YOUR business, then what are you doing in a fish shop selling fish? Is it the money that you are only concerned about? Either way, fish is your business and it is not just a fish.

My friend recently lost someone close to her, and lost a pet she's had for years. Your comment didnt help. Show some sensitive next time someone's fish is sick, otherwise, leave your comments outside. You do not know the background of every customer that comes to you, so show some professionalism and sensitivity. Otherwise go volunteer in a trauma unit at the hospital, might teach you something about compassion.

I lost 3 prized discus today due to the heat, and trust me, it's not just a fish or 3 fish.
