If it eats pellets, then I wouldn't bother with live food, unless it is for your own personal enjoyment.

4x1 is a very small tank when talking about Murray Cod. Myself, I wouldn't bother as it is only a very temporary home. It has the potential to outgrow your tank in a VERY short space of time. I would say it would be under 6months.

1cm a day, that is ~30cm a month. That is insane growth if achievable. Never seen anything come close. I think ~5cm a month I used to get out of big catties.

Hey Guys,
When I first bought him I did some surfing. (Wrong order I know!) I got the impression that they were relatively slow growing when compared to say Barra for example. Both have highly pallatable flesh but I would have thought that the Murray Cod is generally not farmed to the same extent for this reason. The same time and food put into trout and barra would yield a greater harvest. I have no doubt that an individual could be grown quickly with the intent to create a tank buster but I feel mine will be comfortable in a four footer with standard feeding for a couple of years. But I may be wrong as always!!! wink.gif I know at some stage one of you tank buster luvvers will be happy to give him a good home! Maybe then we will see how Jack fares? wink.gif

Anyway guys, enjoying this thread. I have included a link below on the comeback of said native fish. Shame we can't have similar successes here in WA. Love the irony of the bastard carp helping out!!

There was a study done on them somewhere by a uni trying to work out the best foods for them.
Results showed that if temps are kept right and they are feed a 50% protein diet you can achieve growth rates around 1:1or better
I don't think it would be unreasonable to expect around 1.5:1 which is what you get out of barra.
And you should get two growing seasons out of them per year unlike trout or barra.

I am trying probably 50 in my pond in December...

Studies have shown that a high enough stocking ratio stops aggression.
But no one can tell me what ratio is high enough!
And I don't want o2 injection.
So I'll try 50 and see what happens.
I can handle 75, 100 if I add another grow bed.
Also, being a round clear pond means less chance of fish establishing a territory.

Guess we'll know around June! smile.gif

Would love to try breeding them... Just gotta wait 6 years.... If a pair lasts that long!

Protein requirements paper HERE

Stocking rates HERE
It mentions 30-40kg / m3 average
So in my tank I can expect to be able to do at max around 100 fish to 750g.

Should get one as a little pup mate and grow it up big n strong! Could compare growth rates with Andrew, aquaculture feed vs fresh seafood and massivore. See who wins!

Would be an interesting experiment, I'd back myself in wink.gif

In all seriousness, I don't really want to set up another tank to grow a Cod out. But could probably accommodate a 25cm + fish.
