Dr. Herbert Axelrod, was one of the founders of the ornamental aquarium hobby.  He was the author of many books and publications, and his name is honoured in the scientific name of many aquarium fish (Cardinal tetra, Black neon tetra, Corydoras, etc.) He passed away on 15th of May 2017 at almost 90 years of age.

I'm guessing his passing will mean little to newer hobbyists. In this age of the internet there isn't the same need for printed works. For the older generation, who started dabbling in fish well before the advent of the internet, books by the likes of Axelrod were our bibles. Either way - each and every one of us, young and old, owe a debt to this man for his huge contribution to our hobby.

Wow ! Very sad news - Disappointing he was recognised more for his string collection than his massive contribution to freshwater aquaria.

Although not a public figure (He never liked to do interviews) Axlerod was THE biggest and most Influential name in the hobby. He was responsible for the commercializsation of many of the species we see today and bringing the hobby to so many people. He had quite the life, from a Phd In mathematics, a $70 million dollars publishing empire, dodgy violin collection and a short sentence for tax evasion, he will be missed.

RIP.

Still got a few of his old books packed away somewhere from when I started keeping fish at the age of 12. Very sad to hear. RIP

That is sad. He left a legacy that will be remembered for a long time, I still have a number of his books. Lets not forget the rainbow fish named after him Melanotaenia herbertaxelrodi, a nice fish.

Totally missed this. Amano, Eheim, Otto and now Axelrod. Its like a whose who of oldschool fish world. The good doctor Axelrod is a personal one for me, as he replied to my fan snail mail. Something that doesnt seem such a huge deal in these days of stars with facebook pages and twitter accounts, but which back then made me feel like the chosen one! Seen together that crew could build a mean setup. Amano on the aquascape, Eheim on the biofiltration, Otto on the mechanical filtration and Axelrod with the wildcaught discus and cardinals. Kudo's to them all and RIP the good doctor :(
