So have decided to go with a planted discus tank. Willing to do the hard yards to get it all perfect. Tank is 350L and building a 150L sump so filtration should be good. Seen some really beautiful planted tanks that have inspired me to go this way. Have been researching it all but haven't seem to found one that I like. I saw someone use soil... He saturated it for 4+ weeks then planted the plants and they looked amazing. Wanted like low reed plants the. Bigger ones at the back with drift wood throughout. Moss growing on the wood looks cool but would eventually need assistance on that. Any tips on substrate that I should use? Not a fan of gravel.

The picture isn't my aquarium but I would like it like that eventually. If it takes me a year so be it

thats only the best you can use some top soil from your yard mixed with some clay then throw some gravel/sand ontop

Edit:Thickness probably 30-50mm i find it really hard to plant stuff in any less then 30mm

To give you an idea at what it'll cost you ADA wise, I just bought 2x 3L bags of ADA Malaya and it is a decent amount/thickness for a 2x1x1ft tank.. Cost me $27 a bag at Seaview Aquariums.. I think the 9L bags were $80 or so.

Good luck.

Found someone on gumtree who I bought 7 buckets of the ads stuff for $250. His name was Carlos and he was located down in slater point. He has amazing set ups and definatly knew what he was doing so I trusted him and he is giving me advice which is great. Thankyou everyone for your help. He agreed that it's the best stuff for plants :)
