everyone is different and some go into hobbies by diving head first and others test the water with their feet first...

this is my point exactly not so bright people dive in head first and recieve paralasis and brain damage

do the math:P testing/research=safe, dull=wheelchair

i know which one i would prefer wink.gif

ivan, this was the first forum i joined a while ago and the way it was then, as still is now, was confusing to me as a forum begginner and at that time a computer begginer.

my opinion that people that dont research their fish of choice before purchase is my opinion and for you to seemingly comment on it like an arse is just rude. most reputable lfs will offer advise of research then buy and are mostly under the understanding that if a person does not follow that advise then oh well, if they dont listen they will just be back to spend more money anyway- win win for the lfs

i am not an expert, i am very knowledgable on the areas of fish keeping that i know and the ones that i dont know i do not to comment on, but as i follow the advise of my lfs i research so i know at least as much as is possible if something is new to me or goes wrong. the problem is that most that ask how do i do this that and the other are kids, one of the main problems with forums, and as such when a comment is made like 'dull or irresponsible' in regards to these people maybe i should have said 'lazy' as most of the time if they took 30 minutes out of their day to look things up they would at least know most of the answers to their questions.

Well "lazy" is fine by me... "not so bright" is pretty insulting... also not all new comers are lucky enough to find reputable lfs or even such a forum, they may have followed the advice of crappy lfs and end up buying and spending more money as well... so by putting these people who have been "talked" into some fishes by crappy lfs in the category of "not so bright" may not be justice... and trust me I know of some crappy lfs that knows even less than I know...

if you are really that passionate about your views then i encourage you to meet me in person and i will sort you out face to face as i take the approach of trying to help out anyone- especially the younger forum members, not critisice those for trying to explain their point of view unless they are obviously so single minded that they dont look from other peoples veiws and i seek out the older members of our fish society to learn from their vast knowledge. if you think that this is 'alienating' begginners or new people then just ask them......

Well fair enough you may have good intentions to help out... and I too will try to help out others where possible... but it might be good not to take a shot at their intellect...

if they agree with you then i stand corrected but im sure that as you were the reason why this topic started in the first place then you should shut up and listen to more seasoned people in the hobby.

Fair enough I will shut up... no worries...

aquaponics is an area un which ivan is obviously versed in and he did say he will help where he can so i dont think this is what he meant

on the other hand a forum member who has been here for less than 6 months shouldnt be so open in critisising peoples opinions, i have no quams against ivan but as a discussion on how the forum should evolve is at hand he has only a small amount of input that can be of relivance.

if i didnt work till 9pm every night i would be one of the first people at the pcs meeting debating this issue but as i cant be there i can only put my strongest argument forward in a venue that i think would have a minimal impact as all rebutals that come up cant be dealt with with the same efficiancy as a person to person debate can.

and i still stand by my not so bright comment, if you dont seek out and shop around for the best services/prices, ie prominent lfs, then you have no argument against it as a buyer/budding aquarist. my first 3-4 weekends getting into fish/aquariums was spent going through the yellow/white pages looking and visiting all the lfs within an hour of my then place and as such i knew where and who i wanted to deal with. like i said before research and testing = smart

Hey guys

The goals are -
  • To help minimise moderation (moving of posts to correct sections)
  • Being more "user-friendly" by providing clearer forum descriptions

Some are the discussions above aren't so "user friendly". Perhaps a tad more care could've been taken with the replies so that they did not come across as offensive..?

In regards to making the cichlid section more specialised I can't make that decision and it'll need to go to the committee for discussion.

I think the number of sub-forums is fine. By increasing the number of boards are we likely to increase the number of people using this forum? I doubt it. But with that being said we are a cichlid group does one board suffice? I would stick with renaming some of the boards and there descriptions. I think another one which needs consideration is the rewording of the catfish & loach forum. Just because the PCS inheritted that board does not mean we cannot change it to suit the layout of the remainding boards.

+ 1 for Tankbusters, fish that grow larger than 30cm.

I always thought fish like Tetras went into the planted and community forum.
When I first started on here, I didnt know what a tankbuster was, and there still isnt really a true distinction, as can be seen by this thread.

Technically Ivans Barras can go in this forum, except when his fish bust his tanks, he eats them!

More subforums makes it too hard, and I dont really think there is enough traffic on here to warrant it.
Just agree on a size limit and move on already!

(I confess! I haven't read all the posts in this thread... so sorry if someone has already posted about this issue.)

I agree that the Tank Busters and Other Fish title might be too general - since I have read it as literally Tank busters, and any other fish, tank buster or not, which don't fit in the other categories. Like Siamese Fighting Fish/Bettas, for example... I don't think they're a Community Fish? but they're not a Cichlid, or a Catfish/loach... So where do they go? I was going to ask about them here, and then I saw this thread, so now I'm all confused.

But that said, I have never had a problem with how the forum is set out, and people here are generally so friendly and helpful that any vagueness in topic titles isn't really an issue, because people point you in the right direction without any violent retribution!

Also : I love the new forum design. It's sleek and elegant, very swish. smile.gif

OK interesting development on the PJ shark popping up and getting moved, before I suggested that Tankbusters = fish over 30cm, may have to be FW fish over 30cm?

Cheers

An interesting thought - Can't we simply leave the name of the forum as is. I think it has worked fine as a subforum so far and have never had any problems.
