I was sitting in my school library the other day and I was doing homework on the computer, then I finished and was bored so I was just researching fish and this kid from my year (who is in a couple of my classes ) sneaks up behind me and sees me looking at fish and goes " what the hell are you doing, why you looking at fish, that's so retarded " then he walked off and keeps teasing me about it , but I just ignore him as he doesn't know that there is a million other people in this world that share the same hobby. And even people that come to my house find it strange

I remember when in Y8 homeroom we got called out for overdue library books. I hadn't returned the school's copy of  "Australian Native fishes for aquariums". I copped a bit of flack over that. Don't listen to the little spits, they don't have any hobbies and will spend their time being cool by going to parties and getting drunk and passing out on peoples lawn.

Do what you want, find your passion or something you're interested in and ignore the neighsayers.

After all, Fish keeping isn't a matter of life and death, it's far more important than that

Have had a few people at work question my sanity.
A couple of those now keep display tanks with cichlids. Lol
It's funny. People knock something they know nothing about. Then start explaining the hobby and the varietys and how the options are endless. Some end up fascinated and get a small tank......we all know what happens then. Ha ha.

Michael,

The thing is everyone is weird... Some people just pretend they arent. (The guy laughing at you probably has something secretly weird going on like sitting with his mummy watching Sponge Bob Square Pants every night or acting inappropriately with his cousin  ) They're the ones who worry about what other people think. How much fun do you reckon that would be? Always trying to fit in, bugger that! Iv'e always made a point of being different. Some people like it some dont! Some people like you and the things you do, some dont like you and the things you do. Thats life mate, welcome to the rodeo, Most kids are just to stupid to understand how it all works.

PS - hold the Tasmanian jokes RE: inappropriate behaviour with cousins  :brickwall:

i reckon at your age you should be very proud of yourself as you seem very knowledgeable and have a great understanding of the hobby. don't let some idiots let you think otherwise.

spend their time being cool by going to parties and getting drunk and passing out on peoples lawn.

I still do that :)

DAMM IT!!! You beat me to it........

As all said above, just be yourself..

Im 37yrs old, act like a kid, sometimes I have a longish goatee and a mohawk... Who cares? Not me.
Why should I, If people care so much about what Im doing then they have nothing exciting going in their lives :)

And when I do sport such a fancy look I get all the looks from the "Squares" and I can imagine what they say but again I couldnt careless.

I have a great paying job, 4 awesome kids (The missues isnt too bad either) and I keep fish too :D

The real question you need to ask your self is... how important is it to you what this kid thinks of your hobby? do you really need to care what he think of your hobby?  is there any reason why you should care? I am pretty sure you already know the answer.....
