Gday all,

Thought i would say hello and introduce myself. Since i was a kid i have loved aquariums, with my very first fish being an axolotl before i was school age. Now i am old enough to look after myself you can be sure that the aquarium is back!

It all kicked off with my trialing aquaponics. I bought a small aquarium with i was planning on starting a trial system with. It didnt take long before i was using an IBC for my aquaponics, so that left me a free aquarium. I was running neon tetras as the like, however the dwarf flame gourami always caught my attention. I tried a few times with them but i have always been unsuccessful with them. So rather than constantly killing fish, i left them to learn more about what i was doing. I have always enjoyed looking at the cichlids at the LFS, but the high price has always turned me off them after the gourami.

So here i am to trawl through your forums and learn what i can so that hopefully in the next 12 months or so i can actually think about getting some bigger fish.

My system as it stands is a tiered system consisting of 2 x 3 foot tanks and my grow bed. The grow bed is on the top, with a grow light, then my main tank that flows into the bottom sump/display tank which pumps up to the grow bed. I know that this is very different to how a lot of you guys run your tanks, but i have enjoyed a very high level of water stability. Early on, i had someone looking after my tanks for a week while i was away and it got about 3 months worth of food. Aside from the mess in the tank, there was no ammonia or nitrite spike at all.

I do fortnightly to monthly water changes, purely because the plants in the grow bed can not use the nitrates quick enough at the moment. I have been trialing new plants (succulents if you can believe it!) that seem to be taking off, so hopefully before long i can push the water changes out further. I know that is probably a contentious issue here, but i am confident that no water changes should be required at all if the plants can use up the nitrates. I dont use meds in my system at all, so i dont think there will be anything building up in the system that the plants wont be using. Of course with more delicate species i could be entirely wrong :) I also have compost worms in both tanks and the grow beds to break down any solids from the fish.

I am definitely more keen on the planted tanks rather than the more 'sterile' sand and rocks, as beautiful as they can be. It definitely makes me jealous seeing all the plants you guys n gals down in perth have access too :) My lower tank is empty at the moment, so i may try dipping my toes in with a hardy cichlid species if i can find some up this way.

I will try and get some photos up in a few days time to show you all how everything is set up. Ill also go through my blog and try to find a few photos. It is all very agricultural at the moment, using pvc etc. I wanted to learn what i was doing before i invested too heavily :)

Cheers

Ryan

Here is an image so you can kind of see what is going. This was pre upgrades i did a few weeks ago. The grow bed sits on the top shelf.

It isnt pretty, but it is reliable :)

Hey mate welcome to pcs :)
I'm originally from Geraldton, but in perth now.
How expensive are cichlids up there now? When I lived there about 9 years ago, electric yellows were around $25 at the place road garden Centre.

So 9 years ago they were still cheaper than CF sell them for..

I like your aquaponics idea but that light fixture frightens me.
Look forward to seeing more pictures of your upgraded AP setup.

Thanks.

Snakebite I would have to check the prices. Not knowing the breeds and what they are worth I don't know if they are fairly priced. They are all worth a lot more than all the other fish I buy though :)

Jack, they are 12v LEDs with the power lead of the PSU secured. These are just a test to see how the plants grow with these LEDs....

The main reason that it is agricultural now is that I could get told at any time to move out of the house, so I don't want to make anything too permanent.

Thank god, I thought they were little MH lights and I thought you'd find them on fire sooner or later.
How are the LEDs going?

Haha MH down lights will never be in a property I occupy! Being a sparky I have little love for them.

The plants look healthy, although I don't see anything like the growth that I have seen from other forum members. Whether that is from the lights or CO2 or nutes I don't know.

I am going home for the night tomorrow so will try and get some happy snaps.

Welcome to the forums. Would love to learn a little more about aquaponics.

LEDs are great, as you say you are a sparky so you should know lots about the wattage of the LEDs however I think you just need to make sure the LEDs are covering the right spectrum of light that the plants require.

Here is a photo of my tank on LEDs so I can't see why out-of-water plants can't grow with them either :)

Beautiful MrLeifBeaver!

Unfortunately I dont have the spectral output of the LEDs i am using. Thats why they were a trial.

I was using a LED tube for the plants in the grow bed too, but it just didnt have the output needed. LEDs purely for lighting tend to not have a great spectral range.

I was looking at making my own LED grow lights, but the LEDs that were suitable could only be purchased in 10'000 unit lots.

My LEDs are called 5030s I have 8x Super Bright, 4x warm white, 4x Blue and 4x Natural light this so far has met all the light spectrums that i wanted. Each 500mm strip of light has 30 little LEDs on it I think.

Thanks myster619 :)

MrLeifBeaver i was put on to cutter electronics yesterday as a source for a good selection of LED's so i might have to revisit them. I am quite happy with the light of what i have now, although a boost in the photosynthesis spectrums would be good.

Kleinz they are GU5.3 Basically the same as the GU10, just different pins.

I got some pics last night when i went home, so i will upload them to my blog and share them shortly.

Here are a few rushed snaps from last night. Ill try and get some better snaps during the day time when im home. You can see how many snails are in the sump at the moment. Might have to try and make a snail trap that i saw on here. As you can see, it is nothing special :)
