#364674 January Meeting - P C S Family Bbq Day

Posted by Muttley on 14 January 2018 - 07:02 PM

Hey everyone,

Thanks for the nice lunch and a good chat. Despite being 38 degree it was actually quite nice down at the foreshore. Sorry we had to disappear to the family thing but I wanted to thank those that organised it all and put on a great spread.

Cheers

#364510 Altolamprologus Sp. - Are They Common In The West?

Posted by Muttley on 01 January 2018 - 04:38 PM

Hey Jason,

Certainly seen them around, the calvus blacks were the club's fish of the month a few months back. I was in aquotix a few days ago and they had some juvie blacks in stock and maybe a second kind (can't remember). I found looking through the club's auctions to be a good way to see what people are breeding and of course looking through aquotix, vebas, pet magic (the better LFS's in perth imo) etc.

Links to the months that had auctions are below, scroll past all the info to see the list of lots

#364495 Total Sump Newbie

Posted by Muttley on 30 December 2017 - 04:51 PM

Thanks for the reply Chris, I went in and had a chat to Mattia which solved all my issues and I walked away with the supplies to do the sump. I'll post some quick mock ups I did based on Mattia's drawings so if anyone in the future is a newbie like me looking for info there are pictures here.

This is the final result of what i'm going with for the moment.

This is what i'm considering doing based on room in the sump (it's quite small) but I want to play so it's likely. I want to play with the K1 media even if it's on a small chamber and it only involves siliconing in one more glass panel to achieve.

Big shout out to aquotix for the great service.

#364488 Total Sump Newbie

Posted by Muttley on 28 December 2017 - 10:15 PM

Hey everyone,

Well the hobby has certainly gotten into the blood of me and my missus. I've purchased a second tank from someone on Gumtree for $150 (lets not mention the rack from Bunnings that's been purchased or the quote on 3 extra tanks to go on the rack from aquotix). I think I got a decent bargain on the tank as it used to be a marine tank but some mid twenties bloke finally got off his arse and moved out of home so his parents wanted it gone. It's 3*2*2 made from 12mm glass (no idea why on such a size tank but i'm not going to complain) on a cabinet which has a 70*43*47 sump in it. It also came with pumps etc etc. Most of the equipment was so covered in old rock hard salt that I'm not sure it's worth keeping but the wife wants to do marine one day so it's all thrown into a box. After a clean, scrape, soak in vinegar, scrape, clean, more scrape and more clean it now looks like this.

It still has some salt on it but i'm filling it with water, letting is dissolve some of the salt and then replacing the water for a while. Finally I figure a small amount of leftover salt won't be a big issue. The main reason I wanted to ask for some help was I've never setup a sump before. I've been madly reading articles and watching youtube vids but wanted to get some local opinions. The sump is built like this

So my current thoughts is I would put some of that plastic grid stuff on the ledges in each of the first two zones? Followed by different density foam plus the white filter wool in the first zone with a bunch of filter media in the second zone? Lastly I would just have my heaters, water pump, airstones and seeding sponges in the last zone? If this isn't correct or if anyone has any better solutions any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers for any help in advance ;-)

#364426 Gumtree Ad

Posted by Muttley on 18 December 2017 - 02:47 PM

Ok I like gumtree for getting some decent deals at times but I think I just fell down the rabbit hole. I looked at the add below and thought $20 for a 3*1.5*1 would perhaps be a good tank to setup some shellies in but figured that at $20 chances are the tank would be shit but i'd have a look.

https://www.gumtree....rout/1169178133

Anyway I got there and this house had a doorbell with writing all over the wall around it pointing to the doorbell saying "USE ME" and "RING ME" etc(and yes he had used a permanent marker to write all over his own wall), then I looked up and figured out why, not only did he have a camera above the door there were 4 camera's across the front of the entire house. At this stage i'm thinking "ok a bit weird but maybe just a security nut". I get taken out to see the tanks in the granny flat out back, would be a perfect room to turn into a fish room and this guy had.... kind of. There was shit everywhere including glass off cuts and broken glass everywhere, this guy is talking like he's on something the whole time. The 3*1.5*1 tank I was interested in turns out to be more like 2*1*1 so i'm immediately not interested. He then starts trying to sell me his fish as he's moving house, he starts with the flowerhorn (let me state I had not interest in anything this guy had let alone a flowerhorn but he wouldn't shut up) which is just a plain orange nothing more. Then he show's me his only other two tanks that are running, 1 is quite big and has some green terrors, dovi and bala sharks but only one filter, one of those small internal filters even though his add says he has big one for sale. Hence the water looks shit and the fish look pretty average and I didn't even see a canister filter let alone a sump or anything for his "monster tank". The second is full of fry that are from the female dovi and the flowerhorn he showed me and I can have a "scoop" of fry for $10 as it would be "awesome" and "way better than the tanganyikans" I mentioned.

Couldn't get outta that joint fast enough, bloody gumtree.

#363254 Photobucket Sucks!

Posted by Muttley on 08 September 2017 - 05:03 PM

Ok i've tried several ways to post it but I can't get the link to show up with either the picture coming up or the forum giving me an error message. If you go to your imgur account and look at the pictures you've upload, when you click on one of your picture there is a bunch of text boxes on the right that can be copied and then pasted onto the forum. To have just the picture actually appear in your post it's the BB code one you want.

hope this helps

#363224 September Meeting - Breeding 101

Posted by Muttley on 06 September 2017 - 09:28 AM

It was me and my wife's first meeting and we had a good time. The booty given away in the raffle was unreal while the talks were interesting. It was a very welcoming and inclusive atmosphere so we'll definitely be back for more, especially as the meeting has my wife wanting a cichlids tank now so anything that helps me sink the hobbie's claws in deeper is great.

Cheers to the organisers.

#362869 Been Lurking, But Took The Jump And Joined Pcs

Posted by Muttley on 06 August 2017 - 12:04 AM

Hey Everyone,

I never really know what to put in these intro posts but I guess a short history will do. I've loved aquariums my whole life but originally only kept them while I was a kid and into my very early 20's. Then uni, partying and living in rentals killed having a tank. Fast forward to my late 30's and I'm now married, own my own home and figured time was right to get back into things. Even better with all my excitement etc I've managed to get my wife into it as well ;-).

We're currently renovating my office and the plan is for 2-3 large tanks in there but that's not happening until I finish the reno. In the mean time to get myself back into the hobby and wife suckered in (insert evil laugh here) we've just started a tank in the lounge room (4ft * 1.5ft * 1.5ft). Keeping this tank simple while having lots of activity and colour so it's going to be a tetra community (12*rummy nose, 12*cardinals, 6*glass cats, 6*corydoras julli, some shrimp and a bristlenose pleco). I've never had cichlids but they are what I want to get into having in my office tanks.

Hence after lurking around the different internet forums and youtube for the last couple of months I figured it was time to throw $25 at PCS and join. Looks like a cool auction just happened and seeing those types of events with the wife sounds like great fun. Hopefully we'll poke our heads into the meetings and meet you all, even if things are a bit fishy ;-P
