Hang on, one minute you said frozen water is no help and now you're telling me that i should use both frozen water and fan? LOL, sorry i must have misunderstood you!

You don't suppose I go out to buy 10 fans if I have 10 tanks and pack them away when the heat wave over, do you?

Does your fish jump? Mine do, so I don't think leaving the lids open for me is wise!

I do not disagree with you that using 'fan blow is an effective way to lower tank temperature', all I said that 'the size of the ice block vs the size of the fan' are the variables one need to consider so therefore you are incorrect to say that 'fan blow is more effective than ice cube'. If you are going to quote 'research shown' then you must have some figures to back it up or maybe a link.

You do drink beer, don't you? do you use fan to keep the beer cold in the bucket or do you use ice? Exactly, size does matter!

There are other variables that could assist to speed up or slow down the melting process such as: water flow/air bubbles/the amount
of rocks/lighting intensity etc

Let take water flow variable as an example, 2 glasses of Scotch with same a mount of ice cubes and same amount of scotch.

One glass you constantly stir and the other you let it to melt. Which one you reckon will melt faster? Exactly, water movement/flow
will assist the melting process to go faster!

Now, let add an other variable to the equation: 'fan' vs 'stir'

...errummmm...sorry!

*I have not got to this stage of yet because I could not wait hahaha...but you could try and let me know!

Mate, relax...just having a bit of fun...and don't take thing too seriously...temp is raising and i am off to Kal for some more testing! This time explosive!

cheers,

PS,

if , by cost you meen the power to run a fan v's a freezer v's dead fish your wrong there too

My cost is a bit different than yours?...let see...

My costs = (prices x 2 fans) + (power to run 2 x fans) + [(a lot of DEAD fishes (jump)]!

or

My costs = 6 bucks of ice bags from Thirsty Camel!

Which one should i chose?

i do not mean fan AND ice

i mean a fan will cool water by upto 3-4 degrees where as ice maybe 1 degree

this was done on a 700L tank and ice was applied at 20 x 2L coke bottles , my freezer couldnt handle anymore bottles nor could my tanks.

now $6 for unknown water source per bag might be fine for you , but it aint good enough for my fish

if you have "jumpers" use fly screen to block points of departure

I DO TAKE IT SERIOUSLY as many people use these forums to ensure their pets dont suffer and die , what annoys me is when people get on here and argue and speak rubbish and contaiminate posts with information that is not correct.

do not ramble on with unfounded crap in your posts , if you are here to share experinces so others dont have to make the same expensive mistakes that you did then thats great , but if not there are other forums for that.

keep your theory to yourself untill tested or start a thread "what do you reckon of .............." and get other peoples opinions.

i dont feel that is neccesary for me to prove myself with facts and figures to appease yourself , this topic and testing was done on this forum with several members involved and will still be archived on here somewhere. if you have a question PM dont start shooting off at the mouth about theorys that are unfounded.

i do meen go and buy 10 small fans as i have stated this is the most effective way to reduce temp by a significant amount which will be the difference between life and death.

im presume you would know this if you have 10 tanks and have been in fish keeping for more than 5 minutes and survived a few of Perths summers.

Hope this helps a few people

Cheers

Guys, this is starting to read like an argument. The original question was "how is your tank temp" not "what is the best way to cool your tank". There is already a thread on that I believe.

I'm sure there are calculations you can do to find out the most effective way of reducing water temp by set degrees. There are many variables such as tank size, location etc so there is no one way that will suit everyone. Experience in this matter from people who have used certain methods would be the best guide for people with similar setups and conditions.

I have airconditioning at home, but dont leave it running if no one is home; so in an attempt at lowering/controlling the higher levels in our summer I use pedistal fans which we have had for many years, and they do help.
On the very hot days palstic bottles containing frozen water are added - if you have salt water it freezes faster than fresh.
I recently screwed some 4" fans [the type used in computer cooling] to lengths of wood and attached them to the tank ends, this 'blows' across the surface and seems to work.
I also leave the glass covers off and as suggested place fly screen over the tank.

Move to Esperance!!!!

Stupid heat, my fronty tank hit 35 degrees, so I did a 50% water change, water dropped to 31.
Sat there scratching my head, thinking surely it should drop more than that, so I tested the tap water temperature. its 26? How is that going to help me?!!!

COOL DOWN DAMMIT!!!!

Hi everyone,

I only have one tank with livestock in it at the moment. 4ft, inside the house, but at the back of the house, it is currently 29.5 C.

I think that is ok. Fish are eating and not looking stressed. I added another little hang on filter and I am using the duck beak thing to try and move the water surface more in an attempt to oxygenate the water.

All looks well for now.

Regards,

Donna

Bit of an old thread.. may as well bring it back up though with these hot days!

The tank has been getting around 30-32c on these near 40c days.. should I be worried / invest in a chiller? The peacock bass seem to love it if anything... not sure how stingrays do with it though.

Pump heaps of air into the water, they should be fine.
Remove lids and place a fan to run over the surface of the water, should increase evaporation, reducing temp

Yeah cheers.

Got 2 air discs running in there at all times, along with the FX5 and eheim 2217 breaking the surface, does that count as a lot of aeration?

If anyones worried about their fish jumping out with the lids off. I just cut egg crate to the same size as my lids and replace the glass lids with the egg crate. cheers Steve and stay COOL.

if ya mist the glass and have the fan blowing on the front on the tank keep glass misted for few hours.
Glass is a better heat exchange than straight exap off top of tank keep in tank air levels up during these hot times.

i have 400 litre reef system i cool down by this method as my frontosa get the aircon room i cant justify a chiller for a dozen or so hot days a year
can drop bout 5 degrees c in 4-5 hours

tanks are sitting on 26degrees .. Room temp is about the same when aircon has been on.. tanks don't seem to fluctuate much at all.

Plus my house is fully Tinted, and second story slab stops any major heat penetrating the bottom floor,

if i am home aircon is generally on a fair bit.
