hi people,do yourself a favour.let your water change supply run for a minute or so and do an ammonia check.i think a lot of people in some areas will be suprised.
due to the lack of rain i have seen spikes up to .2 and above, some fry and young b/n dont like this.let us all know what you come up with and what area the test was conducted.

dougo. ps a product will soon be available to combat ammonia

Hey Doug

Is this from bores? Will we see it in our mains water (I know the water corp feed off bores on occasion).

dazza similar readings have been taken from scheme water and bore water supplies which raises the concern.when we water change and feed i think fish keepers become complacent
knowing the water change has been done and she,ll be right mate.bore or scheme do yourself a mental favour and check.this check can be done before a can of beer
can be consumed.lol

If your tank is cycled, wouldn't the bacteria get to work rather quickly to convert the ammonia??

yes ivan you are correct, in a small system. if one has a large number of grow out tanks the problem is increased. this is much more relievant in a recirc system.
the point trying to be made is regardless of ones set up is it possible to improve the health of our tanks. i think yes

It's definitely something worth keeping an eye on (occasionally test your water straight from the tap). I think we take scheme water for granted sometimes. The fact they tap into underground bores at different times of the year can lead to fluctuations, catching us by surprise.

I use the seachem prime but I find for a small tank Im overdosing as it says on the bottle 1 teaspoon per 700l being that my small tank is only 100l, its hard to measure a dash. is there a fear of using too much with this product or is it ok to put etc in?

up to 5 times is safe. go buy the tiny bottle of prime it has a dropper which is easier on small tanks then just refill it from the bigger bottle as needed.

it is worth while testing your tap water (as Dougo was initially trying to explain) - not all tap water sources contain ammonia - from what I understand, Dougo has a bore, and it is currently coming up with ammonia in it (prob due to the lack of rain we are experiencing) and since he is in Cockburn (part of the Jandakot Water Mound) some of us might be getting some of this ammonia tainted water in our tap water.....

I have worked out the products used in Prime, and the required concentration/dosages, and are currently looking into producing this together with other products regularly used in our industry - I want to make these products more affordable to everyone while maintaining the quality expected by those using $eachem products.....

Once I have these products tested and registered, I will let you know. wink.gif

in the mean time - check your water, and let us know here who has ammonia in their tap water (even a trace amount) and let us know what suburb - I am also interested in this one....
