hi i have soem rocks, apparently from broome... they are a sandstone, but with orangey pink bits due to the dirt there being well, red. i understand this is due to a high iron content but do u reckon they would be ok in a tank? obviously too much iron would be detrimental but how much do you reckon is too much? ive encountered many opinions, from people that think most rocks are unsuitable for tanks, and then other people say anything but pyrite is fine, i will be keeping multies in the tank so the ph will be 8-9 which would indicate there is no problem here... still thought id ask around as it never hurts to ask more questions does it? and many isues are a matter of opinion anyway, or the information changes over time wink.gif

some photos of broome, the rocks are similar looking to the pictures i guess

Wow, amazing rock formations. Here is a great article about the suitability of rocks in the aquarium. It also discusses Iron and other heavy metals.

these sorts of sandstone for tang/malawi use is fine - the Iron is in an oxide or similar form, so not so soluble, particularly in such high pH.

Go ahead and use it.

yeah thats the article that mentions anything but pyrite should be ok... the thing about that site tho is half the stuff in those articles is considered outdated and incorrect when u actually talk to the people there ohmy.gif and i have read at least one crazy paranoid article/post as well, cant remember where i saw it tho ... best to get some more opinions on the subject wink.gif

I used to use sandstone quite a lot before I found Woomera rock wink.gif and never had a problem with it other than the fact that it broke quite easily so I wouldn't go stacking it up into condos if I were you. If using large pieces be careful when taking it in or out of a tank ohmy.gif
